Telemann / Hochman - Festmusiken Fur Altona - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The famous court orchestra of Prince Elector Carl Theodor of the Palatinate was distinguished by the fact that it's musicians were not only certified virtuosos on their instruments but also good composers. Some of these most highly capable musicians basked in the limelight of the international music world, while others stayed in the background without this meaning that they were less-talented musicians. One of them was the horn player and later double bassist Anton Dimler, a member of the Mannheim Court Orchestra who today is known as a composer only to a few specialists even though his works exhibit great quality. This is also true of his clarinet concertos, three of which have been recorded for the first time on the present . The focus in them is always on the highly virtuosic solo parts, while the orchestral accompaniment exercises a subordinate function. The soloist has the opportunity to display his brilliance with passagework, arpeggios, and shifts of register and makes all the colors of the clarinet shine over it's whole tonal gamut. The three compositions brought together on this demonstrate how Telemann could be relied on to compose not only church music for ordinary religious services but also works for extraordinary sacred events and special occasions. Telemann's dedicatory music for the church in the St. Hiob-Hospital in Hamburg, InchKommt, lasset uns anbeten,Inch is scored for an ensemble that is noticeably smaller than those of his other compositions for the dedication of churches. This does not reflect lesser status but owes to the small church space. As a result, the composition convinces the listener with it's intimacy, while the ensemble limited to a few musicians contributes significantly to the exquisite impression made by this lovingly designed music displaying many beautiful details, above all in the melodic and harmonic spheres. By contrast, the stylistic modernity and wealth of imagination in Telemann's sung poem InchGeschlagene Pauken, auf!Inch - which has been recorded here for the first time - makes us sit up and take notice. And the motet InchLaetare iuvenis in iuventute tua,Inch composed in 1758 to a text from the Old Testament, numbers among the few works by Telemann attesting to his activity in the educational field as the music director of Hamburg's Latin School (the Johanneum).
