About this product
Playing at times like a more brutal, fractured version of Laurie Anderson and Kronos Quartet's 2018 song cycle, Landfall while careening from bone-rattling fuzzed-out violin drones that wouldn't be out of place on Stephen O'Malley's Cylene to glorious psychedelic pop songs, Tent Music centers intuition to the point of channeling spirits-cum-archetypes. Tobin's avant-operatic background, including work with Pulitzer Prize winner Raven Chacon, and her celebrated work as White Boy Scream certainly serve as reference points for this work, but the circumstances surrounding Tent Music set it apart from that work, as from the rest of earthly existence. It is in no small sense ritual music in the footsteps of Coil, perhaps automatic music, in the spirit of Austin Osman Spare's automatic drawing. In June 2021, Hill, violinist - noted film composer and multimedia artist - was staying with his parents in Northern Arizona, simultaneously retreating from the pandemic and caring for his father, in the throes of dementia. Tobin, passing through on her way from Los Angeles to New Mexico, stopped to stay for a few nights, pitching a tent in the Hill's yard. On a whim, Hill and Tobin decided to set up microphones and a few instruments in the tent and record, only miles from then raging wildfires, a hundred feet from Hill's ailing father - and yet, evidently, a world apart from any of it sealed off from the smoky skies and from Hill's father, swept up in a mind cutting itself loose from reason.

The eponymously named third and final studio album from Television was recorded and released in 1992, fourteen years after the band's sophomore album Adventure (and subsequent breakup) in 1978. In a decade kicked off by alt-rock guitar albums, the band had regrouped in early 1992 with a new sonic identity. Released later in the year, Television was completely unexpected and unexpectedly wonderful. 'Call Mr Lee', '1880 Or So In World' and 'No Glamour For Willi' rank among the best of the band's material, and the guitar interplay between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd was as mesmerizing and unique as ever.Television was met with met with high critical praise from The Village Voice Incha droll, warm-hearted, sophisticated, cryptic, jazzy yet unjazzlike, they sound like nothing else-except, just a little, like old TelevisionInch, NY Times referred to the album as Inchscaled-down Television with exquisite design detailsInch, and Rolling Stone's David Fricke said it was worth the fifteen year wait, citing the albums Inchcelebration of the lost virtues of precision, emotional depth and sonic elegance.Inch Television toured the record into 1993, then would again disappear from the public eye.Upon it's worldwide by Capitol Records, Television vinyl was not available commercially in North America, it was never pressed past the white tag promo version, so fans had to do with the CD (or cassette) or source a pricey import. This 2024 version is being released on the band's imprint Ohoo Records, and has been remastered for vinyl by longtime Tom Verlaine musical collaborator Patrick Derivaz, who was an assistant engineer on these sessions.

With Play What's Not There, PWNT created another statement of intention that feels less geared toward shows of drum and stylistic prowess, with which PWNT is clearly endowed, and more toward songwriting and texture. The drums are even more dry, and acoustic guitar as a layering instrument has taken the place of keyboard and synth. Thankfully though, PWNT's love of horns remains. Resultantly, the songs sound older, both in terms of sonics and maturity. The respective descriptions of a Inchdreamy, hazy sound that feels perfectly aimed for... scorching summer afternoonsInch created for Inchtransporting listeners onto an inflatable flamingo in a Californian poolInch from ComplexUK and Dork Magazine certainly capture the peership that any listener could make between PWNT's Days In The Summer and Toro y Moi's June 2009 and What For? and Tame Impala's Lonerism, but those comparisons simply don't apply as readily for Play What's Not There.
