High Flying Man feels like a cautionary phrase - it's hard to remove the connotations of Icarus, some of the more-unfortunately famous Flying Wallendas or even just a guy in the middle of a heater at the blackjack table. It's the promise of an adrenaline rush fighting against the eventuality of a comedown on the horizon - a feeling perfectly channeled in The Berries' third LP High Flying Man due out this summer on Run For Cover Records. The Berries is the project of vocalist, guitarist and main songwriter Matt Berry, a Washington native who's spent the past few years living in Los Angeles. In the five years since forming the band they've released a number of records, including Start All Over Again (2018) and 2019's Berryland. During the pandemic touring pause the band also released a series of singles, collected in the Tower of Ivory compilation tape - but all the while, the songs of High Flying Man were coming together in moments of sporadic inspiration, waiting for the right time to come to light.High Flying Man is riff-first rock music with piercing melodies and desert twang, all tied in with the emotions of living in the modern world. Over the course of a year, songwriter Matt Berry demoed countless versions of every song that would end up being on Berryland by himself in his room, but the world refused to stay outside during the process. Berryland sounds like a record designed for good times at first glance - from the psychedelic opening riff of InchMakes Me SickInch to the gigantic chorus of lead single InchFruit,Inch there are moments that feel made for driving down the highway with the windows down. But each song on Berryland has a deeper meaning than what's on the surface - a constant theme of heartache, hopelessness and feeling as if the end of the world could be any day now permeates on standout tracks like InchPassing SceneInch and the fast & furious InchFeral Eyes.Inch This seeming contradiction makes The Berries' album feel vital for today's world - an attempt to grasp at good times while living in end times.

William Tyler composed the music for First Cow, the new A24 film directed by Kelly Reichardt, almost entirely on several of his guitars and a dulcimer. In First Cow, Kelly Reichardt once again trains her perceptive and patient eye on the Pacific Northwest, this time evoking an authentically hardscrabble early nineteenth century way of life. A taciturn loner and skilled cook (John Magaro) has traveled west and joined a group of fur trappers in Oregon Territory, though he only finds true connection with a Chinese immigrant (Orion Lee) also seeking his fortune; soon the two collaborate on a successful business, although it's longevity is reliant upon the clandestine participation of a nearby wealthy landowner's prized milking cow. Reichardt again shows her distinct talent for depicting the peculiar rhythms of daily living and ability to capture the immense, unsettling quietude of rural America.
