Flavio Nati - Guerra-Peixe: Complete Solo Guitar Music - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Cesar Guerra-Peixe (1914-1993) was a Brazilian composer, violinist, and musicologist whose work reflects a deep engagement with both European classical traditions and the rich diversity of Brazilian folk music. Initially influenced by modernist and serialist techniques, Guerra-Peixe later shifted toward a nationalist style, incorporating rhythms, melodies, and structures derived from regional traditions across Brazil. This transition marked a significant phase in his career, as he sought to create a distinctly Brazilian voice within the concert music tradition.Although Guerra-Peixe is not primarily known as a guitar composer, his contributions to the instrument are notable for their craftsmanship and cultural authenticity. His complete works for solo guitar are relatively few compared to major guitar composers, yet they hold an important place in the Brazilian guitar repertoire. These pieces reflect his ethnomusicological interests, often drawing on northeastern Brazilian musical idioms, such as baiao, maracatu, and frevo. Through these influences, Guerra-Peixe infused his guitar music with rhythmic vitality and expressive nuance. His guitar works demonstrate a clear understanding of the instrument's technical and expressive possibilities. Rather than treating the guitar merely as a harmonic accompaniment, he explores it's capacity for polyphony, timbral contrast, and rhythmic complexity. The writing is idiomatic, making effective use of open strings, varied articulations, and dynamic contrasts, while remaining accessible to skilled performers.Played with great feeling for the idiom by Flavio Nati, one of Italy's foremost guitarists, winner of the Golden Guitar. He played in Carnegie Hall New York as soloist in the guitar concerto of Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

Mormon Tabernacle Choir - Sings Christmas Carols - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

For nearly 70 years, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir-today known as The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square-has provided the soundtrack of Christmas. The 360-person, all-volunteer choir's rich and majestic sound is one of the most distinctive in American popular song, and that's in no small part due to the group's legacy of Christmas albums. That legacy, which is still going strong today, began in 1957 with the Columbia Masterworks of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Sings Christmas Carols. Though the Choir made it's first recordings in 1910, Christmas Carols was their first seasonal set, and quickly became a beloved perennial in the Columbia catalog. Eight years later, with stereo sound having all but taken over, the album was re-recorded, and the original disappeared... until now! Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are proud to celebrate the season with the first-ever authorized reissue of The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Sings Christmas Carols in all it's gorgeous mono splendor. Christmas music has never sounded so stirring and inspirational as on this set of fifteen classic carols and hymns, backed by the monumental 11,623-pipe organ at the Salt Lake Tabernacle. We've added four rare period bonus tracks (in stereo) to this essential package. It's all been newly remastered from the original tapes by Mike Milchner at SonicVision, and The Second Disc's Joe Marchese has penned new liner notes exploring The Mormon Tabernacle Choir's history of Christmas music. The most wonderful time of the year has just gotten a bit more wonderful with the CD premiere of this lost classic from InchAmerica's ChoirInch that's sure to enliven your Christmas morning!

Sharon Shannon - Libertango - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Virtuoso accordionist, fiddler and bandleader Sharon Shannon has walked a brave and personal path through traditional Irish music, inventively fusing with reggae rhythms, rock backbeats, and the aching twang of American country and bluegrass. She continues to defy and redefine musical boundaries with her latest album, the stunningly diverse LIBERTANGO. a year's worth of touring recording with Sinead O'Connor has lead Shannon to rediscover the role of female vocalists in her own music, leading to several stirring encounters here. O'Connor guest on two traditional songs, while the much-missed Kirsty McColl delivers the title track, a tango by the great Argentine composer Astor Piazolla.
