About this product

The Chantels were an all-girl vocal group from New York, who followed in the footsteps of The Bobbettes as one of the first African-American girl groups to enjoy major chart success in the USA. They took their name from their school, St. Frances of Chantal, and unlike many of their peers were more influenced by classical and Latin music than by gospel. They were still at high school when they were discovered by Richard Barrett of The Valentines, and signed to the End tag in 1957, having their first pop and R&B hits the same year, featuring the lead vocals of Arlene Smith. This 2-CD collection comprises their A & B sides on the End, Gone and Carlton labels from this era, plus the tracks from their albums InchWe Are The ChantelsInch, InchThere's Our Song AgainInch and InchThe Chantels On TourInch not otherwise released on singles. It features their No. 2 R&B hit InchMaybeInch, and No. 6 hit InchLook In My EyesInch plus their other pop and R&B chart entries from these years InchHe's GoneInch, InchEvery Night (I Pray)Inch, InchI Love You SoInch, InchSummer's LoveInch and InchWell I Told You SoInch. Although they had a couple of minor Hot 100 entries later in the '60s, this collection provides a reasonably comprehensive overview of the primary era of their career, and is a fine showcase for their distinctive style and sound as they paved the way for other girl groups in the charts Album Tracks 1. He's Gone 2. The Plea 3. Maybe 4. Come My Little Baby 5. Every Night (I Pray) 6. Whoever You Are 7. I Love You So 8. How Could You Call It Off 9. Prayee 10. Sure of Love 11. If You Try 12. The Coasters - Complete Singles As & Bs 1954-62 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The Coasters were one of the vocal groups of the '50s and early '60s who bridged the gap between the doowop and R&B eras of the early '50s through to the rock 'n' roll explosion and beyond, with a run of hits that extended into the 1960s. They began life as a spin-off from the doowop group The Robins, adopted by the up-and-coming songwriting and production team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller as a vehicle for their work, changing their name after their first hit from The Robins to The Coasters as they switched from Leiber & Stoller's Spark tag to the Atlantic subsidiary Atco when the duo signed a production deal with the tag. This great-value 56-track 2-CD set comprises all their A &B sides as The Robins and The Coasters from their Spark debut in 1954 through to 1962, plus, as a bonus, the two titles which appeared on their albums during the period and were not otherwise released on singles. It naturally features their eighteen chart entries from the period, including the legendary US and UK hits Searchin', Yakety Yak, Charlie Brown and Poison Ivy, plus other memorable US successes like Smokey Joe's Café, Down In Mexico, Youngblood, Hog For You Baby, Along Came Jones and Little Egypt. It's not only a hugely entertaining slice of R&B-flavored rock 'n' roll, with hits that were landmarks along the rite of passage for many baby-boomers, but a testimony to the songwriting and production genius of Leiber and Stoller, their humorous 'street saga' songs providing the biggest of the group's hits. Album Tracks 1. Riot in Cell Block No. 9 (The Robins) - the Robins 2. Wrap It Up (The Robins) - the Robins 3. Loop de Loop Mambo (The Robins) - the Robins 4. Framed (The Robins) - the Robins 5. If Teardrops Were Kisses (The Robins) - the Robins 6. Whadaya Want (The Robins) - the Robins 7. One Kiss (The Robins) - the Robins 8. I Love Paris (The Robins) - the Robin
