About this product

The Fontane Sisters were a family vocal trio who worked on radio, and made early recordings for the Musicraft tag around 1946, before joining Perry Como's radio show, which led to a recording contract with RCA, for whom they had a number of big hits, including duets with Perry Como. They moved to the Dot tag in 1954, and immediately had major successes with cover versions of big hits from the R&B charts, most notably a pop No. 1 with their version of The Charms' InchHearts Of StoneInch, and a No. 3 with a cover of Boyd Bennett's InchSeventeenInch. This great-value 60-track 2-CD collection features all their 44 entries in the Billboard and Cash Box charts, including their two No. 1s with Perry Como Inch'A' You're AdorableInch and InchHoop-De-DooInch, plus selected A & B sides from their singles for Musicraft, RCA and Dot from the era. Although they were very much part of the middle-of-the-road pop scene of the late '40s and early '50s, their versatility was such that from their beginnings in the immediate post-war years, they were able to sustain their chart career into the rock 'n' roll era. They are a group who, despite their numerous chart successes, have not been accorded the recognition they merit as artists who had the staying power and talent to ride the waves of the music business during the turbulent era of the mid-'50s. This overview of their active career as recording artists provides an entertaining insight into that talent.

Boswell Sisters - Collection 1925-36 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The Boswell Sisters were arguably the best and most original, influential and innovative vocal group in the annals of popular music. With their upbringing rooted in New Orleans jazz and blues they developed their swinging close harmony sound during the '20s alongside the welter of musical innovations that were happening at the time, recording first for Victor and then for Brunswick and Decca through to 1936. Their appreciation of jazz rhythms and blues inflexions combined with their vocal gymnastics to create a unique sound and style, which resulted in huge record sales, regrettably during the pre-record sales chart era, when hit success could not be readily quantified. They were hugely influential, and The Andrews Sisters freely admit to having based their style on the Boswell Sisters techniques, effectively taking over their role when they retired in the mid-30s in favour of family lives. This great-value 49-track collection comprises a significant proportion of the A and B sides of the 78s they released during their active years, and includes the titles which were their biggest sellers and generally regarded as their most typical and important recordings. It comprises solely recordings by the three Boswell Sisters, and does not include any Connee Boswell solo recordings.

The Four Lads - Singles Collection 1952-62 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The Four Lads were one of several male vocal quartets who enjoyed their heyday in the early years of the 1950s which some nostalgia buffs regard as the golden age of popular music before rock 'n' roll changed the pop landscape for ever. The Canadian quartet began their careers singing at the same Toronto church as members of The Crew Cuts, and originally came to the fore providing vocal back-up for Johnnie ray on his landmark hit InchCryInch as well as several later hits. They forged a hit career for themselves in their own right, recording for Columbia, scoring their first hits in 1952, and going on to achieve more than twenty-five hits during the 1950s. This great-value 57-track 2-CD set comprises selected A & B sides of their singles during the era for the Okeh, Columbia, Kapp and Dot labels and features all their 'solo' chart entries from the era, including the Top 10 hits InchMoments To RememberInch, InchNot MuchInch, Standing On The CornerInch, InchSkokiaanInch, InchPut A Light In The WindowInch, and InchWho Needs YouInch. They were very much a group who epitomised the musical spirit of their times, and in capturing the pop mood of those years, this collection offers an entertaining cross-section of their work

Jorge Ben - Samba Esquema Novo - Limited 180-Gram Vinyl - VINYL LP

180-Gram Virgin Vinyl Limited Edition Jorge Ben's debut album Samba Esquema Novo, which met with great acclaim from fans, and encouraged the Philips tag to capitalize on the success with immediate follow-up albums. Ben's characteristic style fuses samba, funk, rock and bossa nova with lyrics that blend humor and satire with often esoteric subject matter. His hits include InchChove ChuvaInch, InchMas, Que Nada!Inch and InchBalança PemaInch (all included here), have been interpreted by artists such as Caetano Veloso, Sérgio Mendes, Miriam Makeba, Soulfly and Marisa Monte. The song InchMas, Que Nada!Inch was his first big hit in Brazil, and to this day it remains the most played song in the United States sung entirely in Portuguese. Outside of Brazil, the song is better known for it's cover versions by Sérgio Mendes and the Tamba Trio. It has also been reinterpreted by prominent jazz artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie and Al Jarreau. 180-GRAM VIRGIN VINYL - THE COMPLETE ALBUM + 5 BONUS TRACKS
