Russell Edling of Cherry would like to announce a moniker change to Golden Apples, and in do-ing so invite you to his new album InchShadowlandInch. Taking cues from mid 2000s golden era indie rock and adding the inevitable realism that comes with being in your 30s, InchShadowlandInch is a rec-ord infused with the warmth and charm of the home where it was recorded, as well as the sense of anxiety and isolation that comes from staying there. It is a whimsical and at times resigned look at what it means to be a reflection, a shadow, something created by the shine of something else. InchShadowlandInch embraces it's imperfections to create an intimate and defined shape, all the more precious for it's decision to not to shine. In the corner of your vision, there's a daydream on a mis- sion says Russell Edling in the beginning of InchPark (Rye)Inch. Humming vibrations crescendo around the words floating in the air and a listener may visualize a flower growing in fast motion, or a dog running backwards, lava flowing, children jumping rope in the evening sun. Suddenly these visions plumet and new frenetic images appear as drums, percus- sion, and full accompaniment burst into space. The band has arrived, a theme recurrent in Golden Apples' new record, Bananasugarfire.A listener might hear echoes of the Velvet Underground, Ste- reolab, Stone Roses, Yo La Tengo, but there is more going on than just a studied homage to indie rock's progenitors. There's a kind of magic in the phenomena of stepping outdoors into the nighttime and gazing up at the milky black expanse. If you wait a while, the void fills in with pinpricks of light and, if you're attentive or just plain lucky-you're rewarded with the sight of the elusive meteor. That experience works as a tidy metaphor for the creative process that formed Shooting Star, the newest record from Philadelphia's Golden Apples, a prolific group of musicians formed and heralded by singer and songwriter Russell Edling.Following the Inchrich jangle and big, well-developed songsInch (Bandcamp) of 2023's Bananasugarfire, Edling sought to deconstruct his creative process by centering collaboration instead of a more solitary pursuit in songwriting, even as personal matters made isolation a more natural instinct. He describes taking time to make notes of the ways, timing and forms in which songs came to him in the process of demoing the record, and regularly questioning if his approach was like that of Inchwatching a pot of water boilInch or waiting for a bolt of light to appear in the sky. In many ways, Shooting Star is an appeal to the muse, a record of Inchsongs about writing songsInch born from Edling's desire to trust his instincts despite the posturings of inner demons and creative roadblocks, and to celebrate the little wins along the way. The result is a sprawling new work packed to the brim with playful eccentricities and dynamism, one that owes as much of it's inspiration to mid-century folkies like Michael Hurley and Karen Dalton as it does to alt rock of the nineties like Yo La Tengo and Stereolab.
