One of the few still undiscovered treasures of American 70's cinema, John Frankenheimer's masterful interpretation of Eugene O'Neill's the Iceman Cometh stands not only as the greatest achievement of the distinguished American Film Theatre project, but also as one of the single richest cinematic re-imaginings of any American play. Having difficulty conceiving a child, American Hannah (Melissa Leo) and Britisher Alistair (James Wilby) hope that a trip to a eunuch shrine in Pakistan will help. Hannah does become pregnant, but the couple soon faces a series of obstacles, including her sudden desire to convert from Judaism to Islam, Alistair's affair with a photographer (Shabana Azmi), and the shrine's members' obsession with the baby. Zia Mohyeddin, James Cossins co-star in this disturbing drama. 120 min.
