Carolyn Surrick writes of this new InchWhen I called Ronn McFarlane in January to ask if he wanted to play a house concert in April, he checked his calendar and said, InchSure, sounds great!Inch Members of Ensemble Galilei... are spread across the country, and we don't usually get together until right before a performance. But Ronn and I live about twenty miles away from each other, so we started rehearsing. February turned to March in this year of COVID-19. There would be no house concerts. But we kept meeting on Saturday mornings... It was a few weeks into March when I turned to him and said, InchHey, let's make a recording in June.Inch It was a crazy idea. We didn't have much shared repertoire... That meant a huge investment of time and energy. I did not receive a resounding affirmative response. But days passed and the reality of the pandemic settled in. Nothing else was going to be happening this spring. No concerts. No tours. Cancellation after cancellation, with no end in sight. InchYes,Inch he said, Inchlet's do this.Inch I called Lindsey Nelson, Ensemble Galilei's wonderful executive producer, and Collin Rae, the master of strategic marketing at Sono Luminus. I texted our producer, Dan Merceruio. Totally on board. We added rehearsals. Wrote harmony parts. Wrote new music. Arranged our favorite tunes for lute and viola da gamba... All in the shadow of the pandemic. Would we have done this a year ago? Not a chance. We were too busy... The recording exists because of this moment in time...Inch
![Nachtmystium - Resilient - COMPACT DISCS [CD]](https://pisces.bbystatic.com/image2/BestBuy_US/images/products/23feef52-d82e-4ea8-8226-8035ff575330.jpg;maxHeight=422;maxWidth=264?format=webp)
Reformed American black metallers Nachtmystium have returned from the shadows on new EP, InchResilient,Inch their first for Prophecy Productions. Spearheaded by enigma Blake Judd, the reconfigured Nachtmystium picks up where acclaimed full-lengths InchThe World We Left BehindInch and InchSilencing MachineInch left off but sheds unprecedented darkness on Judd's artistic turmoil. The violent introspection spread across InchResilientInch's three tracks takes Nachtmystium through new nightmarish landscapes as the group pivot into slower tempi with washes of melancholy as the main sonic driver. Joining Nachtmystium leader Blade Judd are keyboardist Job 'Phenex' Bos, a Dutchman living in Bergen, Norway, where he moonlights with German black metallers Dark Fortress and performs live with black metal icons Satyricon and black-doom luminaries The Ruins of Beverast; bassist Martin van Valkenstijn, a Germany-based musician, who's played live with legends Empyrium, Sun of the Sleepless, and The Vision Bleak, forms half the rhythm section; and drummer Jean Graffio, an American musician, is the other half. Graffio also drums for California-based black metallers Sumeria. InchResilientInch is the start of a new chapter for Judd and Nachtmytium. The EP kicks off with the title track, a full-bodied churn of sadness, desperation, and determination. The main melody is powered by a dreamy keyboard line with Judd employing a despairing riff as counterpoint. InchSilver LanternsInch is more traditional Nachtmystium but with a shimmering centerpiece. Between the half-blasts and tremeloed riffs, the keyboards act as a foil, providing lift to the overall song. InchDesert IlluminationInch is almost uplifting in it's doom-like tempo and sing-song melody line. That, however, is crushed when Nachtmystium invert the motif for a more malicious coda.
