The Musical Approach here involves balanced super-imposition of both premeditated electronic compositions with spontaneous composition. (Karlton Hester) These are chamber works in scope, performed with conventional instruments and synthesizers. Karlton E. Hester, Ph.D. (composer/flutist/saxophonist), began his career as a composer and recording artist in Los Angeles where he worked as a studio musician and music educator. He received his Ph.D. in composition from the City University of New York Graduate Center and is currently Director of InchJazzInch Studies at the University of California in Santa Cruz. As performer on both flute and saxophone, he is music director of the Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band and Hesterian Musicism. Hester is currently music director of Hesterian Musicism, founding director of the Fillmore Jazz Preservation Big Band in San Francisco and served as the Herbert Gussman Director of Jazz Studies at Cornell University from 1991-2001. His formal study included Harry Nelsova and Paul Renzi on flute, Joe Henderson and John Handy in InchjazzInch improvisation, composition with Bruce Saylor and Robert Starrer, as well as studies with Frank Chase and Bill Tremble on saxophone.

Tomeka Reid was awared a MacArthur Genius Grant in 2022. Living By Lanterns was a one time grouping of 4 of the best up and coming jazzers from NYC and 4 of the best from Chicago. The band ALSO includes a SECOND Genius Grant winner, guitarist Mary Halvorson.

Krister Mörtsell was in a hardcore band called Soapbox from Umea, Sweden, home to Refused and a burgeoning hardcore punk scene. The Magic Lantern began as an improvisation project with Krister and several friends recording live directly to mini-discs. They began to a series of limited edition CD-r releases capturing their improvisations and these quickly sold out. This self-titled debut was recorded with six musicians in a Umea apartment. Improvisation is still a main force is the composition of new material, but the songs have solidified and developed from that initial point. Influences range from post-rock, kraut rock, and space rock to experimental noise, ambient, and even industrial music.
