About this product
Recorded over time in James Mercer's basement studio, Phil Ek's Seattle digs, and in Oregon City with veteran engineer Joe Chiccarelli (Beck, U2) - Wincing the Night Away is a Whole new animal. It's is the sound of a band growing up and out. Mercer's infectious, indelible melodic style is still at the core, and unfaltering. But anything can happen around it - and in this case, it does. Channeling a Morrissey vibe, 'Sea Legs' pairs a hip-hop (yes, hip-hop) beat with rich melodic lines and searing guitars. Elsewhere the band toys with tweaked-out piano steeped in psychedelic strings ('Red Rabbit'); fractured synth samples ('Silt Needles')' gauzy, arpeggiated keyboards cloaking thunderous anthems (Sleeping Lessons')' and, taking cues from early Jesus and Mary Chain albums - Seeping, fuzztoned epics ('Phantom Limb'). Finally, 'Turn on Me, Girl Sailor' and 'Australia' are the lilting, exhilarating, rollicking, rock-solid pop songs we've all come to covet from The Shins.

Debademba is a group formed from the magical encounter of two fellow musicians guitarist and inventive beat master Abdoulaye Traore from Burkina Faso and Malian singer Mohamed Diaby, a charismatic griot. These colorful characters are, like the other members of the group, Parisian Africans who are very prominent on the capital's cosmopolitan live music scene. The kind of music they make is modern and explosive, drawing from afrobeat, highlife and mbalax styles, with hints of Mandinka music mixed in, all combined with strong blues elements and the occasional nod to rock. Souleymane is a powerful manifesto and an invitation to celebrate.

Following his seminal Sand in 1977, Swedish experimental composer Ragnar Grippe worked on various art and performance commissions, often returning to Stockholm during the summer months to focus his efforts on his compositional practice. It was there at the famed EMS Studios where he began employing the Buchla synthesizer and the facilities multi-tracking capabilities as new instruments to map his mining of sound and movement.During the late 1970's, Grippe formed a creative collaboration with choreographer Susan Buirge, specifically writing compositions for her works InchRestesInch and InchTamisInch, thus pushing Grippe to start working in a more intricate studio environment. In 1980, Grippe holed up at EMS Studios with the Buchla synthesizer and emerged with a new commission for Susan Buirge later formally titled Symphonic Songs and used in her avant-garde theater piece InchCi-DélaInch which debuted in Paris in 1981. Symphonic Songs showcased Grippe's sound au courant, pushing dense against sparse, calm into cacophonous, using each track as it's own intersecting plane. Since it's live theater debut over 37 years ago, Dais Records releases for the first time Symphonic Songs, one of Grippe's most ambitious compositions to date.
