About this product
The Spaniels were a pioneering doowop vocal group from Gary, Indiana, and were probably the first successful R&B group to emerge from the USA's MidWestern states. They were also the first group to be signed by the new VeeJay tag (they had already signed Jimmy Smith), and became the tag's most successful vocal group as it established itself as probably the first independent African-American owned tag of any significance. The group came together at Roosevelt High School in Gary, led by James 'Pookie' Hudson, and they were the first vocal group to use the technique of having a lead singer at one microphone with the other members at a second. They scored in 1953 with their first Baby It's You, which made the R&B Top 10 and in 1954 had their biggest hit with Goodnite, Sweetheart, Goodnite which was an R&B No. 5 and crossed over to No. 24 in the pop charts. This great value 51-track 2-CD collection brings together all the tracks that they released during the first decade of their career, either as A & B sides of their singles or on their two LPs for VeeJay, and it is a great showcase for their distinctive vocal talents and high quality songwriting. It's welcome addition to Acrobat's already substantial catalogue of doo-wop offerings. Album Tracks 1. Baby It's You (The Spaniels) 2. Bounce (The Spaniels) 3. The Bells Ring Out (The Spaniels) 4. The Penguins were one of the several doowop groups of the 50s who took their name from a bird (others included The Orioles, The Ravens, The Flamingos and The Robins), and they are best known for their much-covered pop Top 10 and R&B No. 1 hit InchEarth AngelInch, which later came to worldwide attention when it was used in the InchBack To The FutureInch movie. Formed at high school in Los Angeles, the group developed a style that was as R&B and rock 'n' roll as it was pure doowop. InchEarth AngelInch was their second for the small Dootone tag, and it topped the R&B charts, crossing over to reach No. 8 in the pop charts, where it was overtaken by the Crew Cuts' cover version. They moved to the Mercury tag, and then to Atlantic, but could not repeat their chart success, despite releasing a string of top class R&B material under the aegis of their manager/producer Buck Ram, whom their shared with The Platters. After some line-up changes, the group eventually broke up in the early '60s. This 42-track collection comprises every track released under the Penguins name on singles, their LP and EPs during their career, so is a definitive overview of their career, and a fine example of their genre Album Tracks 1.
