After an absence of eight years, UK rock band The Subways are back with a brand new album Uncertain Joys. Recorded and produced by front man and producer in his own right Billy Lunn, it was mixed by the Grammy Award-winning Adrian Bushby (Muse, Foo Fighters, Everything Everything), and mastered by Katie Tavini (Mykki Blanco, Arlo Parks, Nadine Shah). Billy (guitar and vocals) and Charlotte Cooper (bass and vocals) also had to cope with a line-up change - founding member and drummer Josh Morgan left the band in October 2020 after the studio sessions had been completed with Camille Phillips coming on board.Kicking off with the excellent riff-heavy lead single InchYou Kill My CoolInch, the album becomes very much a game of two halves. The first set of songs have a generally lighter feel while still being packed with tunes and guitars. The second half is punkier with darker subject matter tackling the state of the world today. The record finishes with InchFuturesInch, a seven minute track that is made up of three sections and is probably The Subways' most ambitious music to date. It's great to see the band still pushing their comfort zone and expanding their sound after twenty years and it's well worth checking out.

The Plan of Paris is an album of eight new songs by guitarist and composer Anthony Wilson recorded during the first year of the pandemic. Side one features songs about loneliness and loss, binge-watching TV, doomed relationships, and disorientation during times of profound loss. Look to the East, Look to the West is Camera Obscura at their best and most evocative. Reuniting with producer Jari Haapalainen (Let's Get Out of This Country, My Maudlin Career), Camera Obscura have crafted an album that simultaneously recalls why longtime fans have ferociously loved them for decades, while also being their most sophisticated effort to date. Lead single Big Love relishes in the space between country rock and prog, a pining break-up anthem featuring the soaring pedal steel of Tim Davidson. Were Going to Make It in a Mans World was co-written with Maciocia for filmmaker Margaret Salmons 2021 film Icarus (After Amelia). (Salmon, in turn, shot Look to the East, Look to the Wests cover photography featuring Fiona Morrison, who was on the cover of Camera Obscura's debut, Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi.). Ironic and sincere, the two navigate the reality of being women in the music industry, somehow floating over Davidsons pedal steel and Maciocias keys.
