About this product
Centenaries often yield rich results in recordings... This one is music by women composers performed by the Women's Philharmonic under JoAnn Falletta which includes premieres of orchestral versions of two chamber-pieces, D'un Soir Triste and D'un Matin de Printemps. I have waited many years to hear these and am overjoyed that they sound so well. Following the piano score of the first, I wonder again 'how did Lili do it?' So many subtle sophisticated ideas how did she think of them, or know they'd work? Because she was an artist-in-sound ! (Gramophone 1993) Album Tracks 1. Fanny Mendelssohn Ed. Joann Falletta Ouverture (1830 2. Clara Schumann; Piano Concerto in a Minor, Op. 7 I Allegro Maestos 3. II Romanze 4. III Finale 5. Germaine Tailleferre; Concertino for Harp and Orchestra (1927) I Allegretto 6. II Lento 7. III Rondo 8. Lili Boulanger Ed. Joann Falletta; D'un Soir Triste 9. D'un Matin de Printemps

this first important black female composer has become celebrated recently as we discover her works. This includes her best Symphony and major Suite (Alto)... *Inchhistory bears down on the opening of the Third Symphony... big moments where Price clearly feels the burden of the African American experience but allows it to fuel her soul. It's easy to forget that she's a contemporary of George Gershwin. In fact, (he) attended the premiere of Price's Symphony No.1. So how do we tell this story, recognising on the one hand... she's been neglected in this historiography, but... also she's very much a part of the American symphonic scene?Inch (*Gramophone) Album Tracks 1. Florence Price; the Oak (1934) 2. Mississippi River Suite (1934) 3. Symphony No. 3 in C minor (1940)
