About this product

Unlike many of his contemporaries, Johann Sebastian Bach never intended to compose flute sonatas or partitas in sets of 6 or 12, as was customary at the time (and as he himself did for violin, cello and harpsichord). Bach's flute sonatas evolved over a roughly 30-year period between c.1717-1747 as he encountered the different types of flute in fashion at the time, and met several greatly skilled flautists. The question of which flautist and flute makers Bach may have known played a decisive role in choosing the program on this recording. In preparation, Frank Theuns compared and assessed the playing qualities of various early eighteenth-century flute types. Eventually, he decided on a copy of a flute made by Pierre Gabriel Buffardin. The balanced, brilliant, Italianate sound of this instrument was a perfect match for the demands of this repertoire. As well as being an unequalled flautist and an accomplished composer, Buffardin was also a renowned flute maker whom Bach may have met in Dresden in 1717. Album Tracks 1. Sonata for Traverso and Basso Continuo in E Minor, BWV 1034~Adagio ma non tanto 2. Sonata for Traverso and Basso Continuo in E Minor, BWV 1034~Allegro 3. Mussorgsky / Moser - Benjamin Moser Plays - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Benjamin Moser writes of his new program with Avi InchI have had the idea for this project since 2016. For the occasion of the 10th anniversary of my prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition and of my first album with Russian music, I wanted to make another recording, a sort of InchVolume 2Inch with Russian repertoire. Within that framework I wanted to couple a well-known work with others that are more seldom performed the Pictures at an Exhibition seemed like a good choice, since I had always wanted to play them- particularly in the original version, which I love. I wanted to couple them with Rachmaninoff's 1st Piano Sonata, a seldom-performed work which is both marvelous and underrated. But then I discovered Earl Wild's arrangements of Rachmaninoff songs, and soon became thrilled with these technically demanding yet delightfully lyrical miniatures. A further inspiration was provided by the focus on InchAmericaInch chosen by the Ruhr Piano Festival, where, in the summer of 2017, I performed the programme now featured on this album under the name InchSongs and PicturesInch in a live recital- a daunting challenge indeed! Now, in cooperation with Deutschlandradio Berlin and Avi, this recording now finally sees the light of day.Inch Album Tracks 1. Pictures at An Exhibition 2. Three Preludes 3. Three Virtuoso Etudes 4. Five Song Transcriptions
