About this product
On it's current disc, Ensemble Thios Omilos presents prayers from the midst of religious and everyday life. The five young men sing four- and five-part settings for men's voices from the Romantic and modern periods. 'To pray means to throw one's parcel onto God's doorstep,' said Martin Luther, father of the Reformation. This statement very vividly described the inner dynamics of what happens when humans pray - they give voice to their fears, sorrows, and hopes. Some prayers become lifelong companions. With the help of prayers, humans structure their days and years, giving them meaning. They have continued to do so at very different times and in very different places. The language and aesthetics of many prayers have inspired music for almost as long. This disc features works by Gioachino Rossini, Peter Cornelius, Max Reger, Francis Poulenc, and others.

Premiering in Munich in 1903, Le donne curiose numbered among the greatest and earliest successes of the German-Italian composer Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari. No Wagnerian pathos or turn-of-the-century bombast here Wolf-Ferrari's merry work is based on a Carlo Goldoni comedy in the spirit of a newly discovered rococo. Le donne curiose formed the basis of his world renown as a composer whose dramatic talent was always overshadowed by the subtle humor of his buffo operas. Ulf Schirmer again presents a convincing case on his behalf (previous Wolf-Ferrari, Orchestral Works cpo 777 567-2).

With their debut recording, the Leipzig-based ensemble Thios Omilos give an insight into the sacred music of Jacobus Gallus, Hans Leo Hassler, and Johann Hermann Schein. Hassler's Missa Dixit Maria is at the heart of this production, while the foundations of the Christian faith and man liturgical feasts of Christmas, Easter, and the Ascension form the liturgical framework.
