About this product

In the autumn of 1998, I had the opportunity to visit Africa. Specifically, I participated on a trip arranged by PAND (an artists' organization for peace) to Mozambique, spending most of the time in the capital, Maputo. Among other things, we saw a local dance group. Eduardo Durão was a musician and composer working with the group. So far Eduardo Durão has made only one record under his own name, for the Globestyle tag in 1978. In 1992 he played on Peter Giger's Jazz timbila record. In addition to timbila music, Durão is eager to experiment. Timbila tradition meets with modern times on this recording in different combinations. Durão has some jazz experience from his work with Giger; he even played at the Berlin Jazz Festival. Masso a Ticerto and M'Tshitso are instrumental pieces and they represent the traditional style. Sindatana and Tcigogorolo have the largest instrumental combinations on this CD. Besides the timbila group, singers and percussion, there are drums and an electric bass. I play the saxophone and Seppo Kantonen the synthesizers. On this CD, Eduardo Durão can be heard as a composer, timbila player, singer, and occasionally percussionist.

Heinichen / Dieltiens / Naessens - Dolorosa Partenza - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

This duo is a secret trio while soprano Amaryllis Dieltiens and continuo player Bart Naessens are celebrating their 10th anniversary of InchCapriolo di GioiaInch, there is a third, unmistakable protagonist the sonorous claviorganum (combination of harpsichord and organ) played by Markus Harder-Völkmann, a very convincing representative of this rare instrument group. Dieltiens and Naessens show that the impressive keyboard instrument can be used in a variety of ways in the continuo to present colorful and powerful Italian music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Johann David Heinichen's great cantata InchLà, dove in grembo al colleInch may also be counted as Italian music, as it was written in Italian style during his stay in Italy. Amaryllis Dieltien's soprano is the perfect completion; here she shines theatrically as well as lyrically.

Taraf de Haidouks - Dumbala Dumba - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Taraf de Haïdouk's third album was recorded in their home environment of Clejani and in nearby Bucharest. Just like it's predecessors, it was produced by Stefan Karo, Michel Winter and CramWorld producer/engineer Vincent Kenis. But this time the Taraf have invited a series of guests to appear with them The musicians from Mîrsa with their characteristic call-and-response vocal style, the ursari (who descend from the brotherhood of the bear-tamers), Rosioru, the master of Valachian Gypsy crooners, as well as Viorica, a remarkable female vocalist. Great performances by these musafirii (guests) and by the entire, regular line-up of the Taraf all contribute to make Dumbala Dumba a fresh, warm, intimate and poetic album.
