Tom Rizzo - Day And Night - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Through the richly textured arrangements of longtime collaborator Nick Lane and a stellar new ensemble of some of LA's finest, veteran guitarist and composer Tom Rizzo creates a swinging and wide-ranging new recording of interesting standards and provocative originals. The topflight band, including Joe La Barbera, Bob Sheppard & Bob Summers, digs deep on the swinging original opener InchB-Like,Inch paints a rich landscape on the gorgeous J.J. Johnson classic InchLament,Inch and roasts on the dynamic arrangement of Sonny Rollins' InchOleo.Inch By supplementing the InchBirth of the CoolInch instrumentation on Imaginary Numbers with his sleek guitar work, Rizzo adds a twist to that classic ensemble sound and contributes a worthy modern gem to Los Angeles' recorded jazz heritage.

Years ago; Tony Alonso composed a simple Gospel Acclamation based on the tune LAMBILLOTTE (InchAlleluia Song of the SpiritInch). Song of the Spirit Mass fully extends this tune-based approach to all of the sung portions of the Mass. It features a driving; rhythmic piano part. However; to accommodate a range of contexts; it also includes an alternate accompaniment with more intentional melodic support that is suitable for organ. With the joyful exuberance of the tune at it's core; Song of the Spirit Mass is especially well-suited to Easter and Ordinary Time.

In his trio, Tom Rainey - one of the busiest drummers on the New York scene - has united with two of his closest musical allies. Ingrid Laubrock, the saxophonist extraordinaire who left England for the USA some years ago, causing quite a stir with her own band projects as well as in groups from Anthony Braxton to Mike Reed. Plus Mary Halvorson who in recent years has earned herself a superb reputation as one of the most interesting guitarists in contemporary Jazz and has worked in projects with musicians ranging from John Zorn to Yo La Tengo, as well as with her own groups. Both Laubrock and Halvorson who are also active composers took first places in the DownBeat 2018 Int'l Critics Poll. With these outright individualists Rainey founded his trio in 2009 which now celebrates it's tenth anniversary. The album was recorded live in the Firehouse 12 in New Haven, Connecticut, in front of an audience, neither renouncing studio quality nor the aura of an audience. David Torn, whom Tom Rainey has known for a long time as a musician and studio specialist, took over the post-production. With Combobulated Rainey takes another giant step into the future.
