About This Item

Tommy Johnson was born on the George Miller plantation, (near Terry, Mississippi) in January 1896. Tommy Johnson was related to Alonzo Lonnie Johnson, though Tommy did not get the music from him but from his mother's many brothers who played a variety of instruments. An elder brother among the 13 Johnson children began to play guitar and to teach Tommy when he was 15 or so. The following year he ran away from home with a woman several years older than himself. The move seems to have shaped his music. It seems very likely that he made contact with the cluster of blues singers gathered around Charley Patton and Willie Brown at Drew up in the delta and to have learned a lot from them. Back in Terry in1914 he played for a while with his brother. He married Maggie Bidwell around this time and together they went up to the delta meeting up with Patton, Willie Brown, Dick Branston and other musicians. The blues group Canned Heat took their band name from Tommy Johnson's song 'Canned Heat Blues' which is part of this collection.'Cool Drink of Water Blues' and 'Canned Heat Blues' are by far the best known of Johnson's works, but they've got a lot of pieces surrounding them. 'Big Road Blues' is a fine showcase for Johnson's and Charlie McCoy's paired guitars. And 'Bye Bye Blues' and 'Maggie Campbell Blues' show off his unique vocal qualities. This collection is nearly all of Tommy Johnson's known recordings. Album Tracks 1. Cool Drink of Water Blues 2. Big Road Blues 3. Bye-Bye Blues 4. Maggie Campbell Blues 5. Canned Heat Blues 6. Lonesome Home Blues - Take I 7. Lonesome Home Blues Take II 8. Big Fat Mamma Blues 9. I Want Someone to Love Me - Take I 10. I Want Someone to Love Me - Take II 11. I Wonder to Myself 12. Slidin' Delta 13. Lonesome Home Blues 14. Untitled 1 (Morning Prayer Blues) 15. Untitled 2 (Boogaloosa Woman) 16. Black Mare Blues

Deftones - Around the Fur - VINYL LP
    4.6(12)

Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening InchMy Own Summer (Shove It),Inch serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternate with fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression. This LP version comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Album Tracks 1. My Own Summer (Shove It) 2. Lhabia 3. Mascara 4. Around the Fur 5. Rickets 6. Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) 7. Lotion 8. Dai the Flu 9. Headup 10. MX
