This new album of chamber works featuring piano brings together Brahms' Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, and Schubert's much-loved Piano Quintet in A Major, 'the Trout', delivered by the dynamic and energetic forces of Trio Vitruvi, a Danish ensemble that has risen to become one of the leading chamber groups in Europe since their formation a decade ago. Joined by the duo of violist Hartmut Rohde and double bassist Nabil Shehata, Trio Vitruvi's second official album promises a compelling delivery of works situated at the heart of 19th century chamber music.Brahms' Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, Op. 60, is a deeply emotional and turbulent work, characterised by it's dark intensity, complex harmonies, and dramatic interplay between instruments. It reflects Brahms' inner struggles and depth of feeling, often associated with his romantic entanglements and personal turmoil.Schubert's Piano Quintet in A Major, D. 667, nicknamed the InchTrout,Inch is lighter in character, known for it's buoyant melodies, bright and playful energy, and distinctive variations on his earlier song InchDie ForelleInch (The Trout). Woods' advanced execution and uncanny ability to unfurl extraordinary phrases make him a trumpeter with whom to reckon - Brad Goode. Freewheeling, playful and engaging, trumpeter Kevin Woods, guitarist John Stowell and pianist Miles Black weave their way through a collection of originals by Woods & Black, and others from Jobim, Wayne Shorter, Bill Evans and Harold Arlen on their debut recording. Though colleagues for many years in different configurations, the three found inspiration in collaborating as Trio Linguae (Lin-gwee) through their collective sense of conversational, contrapuntal improvising and reflexive listening - harkening the spirit of duo and trio albums by Bill Evans, Jim Hall or Kenny Wheeler. Integral to Vancouver's creative music scene, Miles Black has been a collaborator of the highest order since the '80s. John Stowell's unique musical voice and relationship to the guitar has gained him untold followers throughout the world since he began touring in the '70s, and Kevin Woods has found his place in Northwest jazz circles as an articulate improvisor and catalyst for artistic endeavors.
