About this product

The final in a compilation series released by Warp in collaboration with Portugal's Principe crew. Inspired by the amount of incredible young artists in and around Lisbon, an overview of an emerging genre and it's evolving sounds. To be released on Warp in October 2015, this started over a year ago as a conversation between Warp and Principe in early 2014 that resulted in a plan to bring the Lisbon scene - of brash, innovative dance music and all-night warehouse parties - to a worldwide audience. CARGAA is a popular slang term on the streets of Lisbon, especially amongst the city's thriving scene of young producers. They use it to describe their tracks, and the expression can be found on their tracks' titles, Soundcloud comments, or in mixes. Taking polyrhythmic inspiration from the African diaspora and welding it intuitively to mutate contemporary club music, artists in the Principe collective have arrived at a startlingly new sound.

For those unaware, Lisbon is having a moment. The youth of the city's neglected outer districts are speaking out and doing so through brash, innovative dance music and all-night warehouse parties. Taking polyrhythmic inspiration from the African diaspora and welding it intuitively to mutant contemporary club music artists like DJ Marfox and DJ Nigga Fox ('Fox' being a widely-used nod to the titular character of the iconic Star Fox video game) have arrived at startlingly new sound. A conversation between Warp and the Principe crew in early 2014 resulted in a plan to bring the scene to a worldwide audience and the concept of the CARGAA compilations was born. Inspired by the sheer amount of incredible young artists in and around Lisbon and the attitude of classic, genre-defining grime compilations like Run The Road, this is an overview of a genre in it's immediate, evolving form - a series of three 12' compilations that dig as deeply as possible into the different sounds that are emerging.

Back digging in their prized vaults, Kerri Chandler's Kaoz Theory tag cherry picks another two classics to be released for the first time on vinyl. Up first, one of Toronto's finest Demuir enlists the signature soulfulness of Bluey Robinson for a bumping RnB-tinged, hazy house bomb entitled 'Lusting U'. The B side starts with boogie-funk bomb 'Better Than Her' by JKriv ft. Saucy Lady & Tortured Soul on vocals. Kim Ahn delivers the deep & sensual vibrations of 'In The Stars', and Cody Currie rounds out the EP with 'Ghost', a funky live instrumentation heavy UK broken beat jazz-dance serving.
