Various Artists - Complete Flute Music 12 - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

This aims to give listeners an overview of 20th and 21st century contemporary music. Mythical themes and their affects have become more and more numerous in the history of flute literature and play an important role in the selection of thematic material for many composers. In many ways, this album introduces the idea of the mythical; it is, so to speak, the compositional leitmotif. This obviously begins with works such as InchSyrinxInch by Debussy, InchSisyphus RedusInch or InchMnemosyneInch by Ferneyhough, which already bear the mystical reference in the title. This also applies to InchCaryInch by Trevor Baca; it is the Czech word for Inchmagic.Inch But even with an InchAirInch by Takemitsu, there is something mythical the work refers to InchSyrinx.Inch All this is interpreted by one of the world's most sought after contemporary flute music specialists, Carin Levine, who has previously performed and premiered over 900 works of contemporary music. The winner of numerous international competitions, former pupil of Aurele Nicolet, is also editor of the series InchContemporary Music for FluteInch at Barenreiter Publishers.

From it's origins as one of the oldest musical instruments known to man to the sophisticated mechanics and elegant design today, the flute has been highly significant for every culture and historical period. Prized for the vocal character in it's sound, composers such as Bach and Mozart used it for some of their most beautiful, aria-like melodies. Spectacular virtuosity later became part of the flute's nature as can be heard in Doppler's Rigoletto-fantaisie, while impressionist composers such as Debussy saw it's timeless qualities as a window into nature or the sensual mysteries of a distant and mythological past.
