About this product

SOMM RECORDINGS is pleased to announce Dreams Melting, a revealing survey of British songs from the early 20th century by tenor James Geer and pianist Ronald Woodley. At the recital's heart are two substantial cycles. Setting seven poems by Thomas Hardy, Gerald Finzi's Till Earth Outwears provides an intimate and movingly melancholic commentary in what Ronald Woodley describes in his extensive and informative booklet notes as a Inchmale perspective on life, love and lossInch. Rarely recorded, Howard Ferguson's five-part treatment of Denton Welch's poems, Discovery, typifies Inchthe subtlety of the relationship between late romanticism, modernism and the inherited idioms of 'Britishness' that composers of Ferguson's generation inevitably grew up withInch. It's second song, 'Dreams Melting', provides the recital's title. Three songs make their first appearance on disc. Elizabeth Maconchy's setting of John Donne's passionate but tortured A Hymn to God the Father boasts a searching vocal line underpinned by tellingly interrogative piano. Phyllis Tate's The Falcon is a sparse but powerful setting of an anonymous medieval text while her variegated treatment of William Blake's poem Cradle Song is reminiscent of a Bartók folksong arrangement. Also heard are Maconchy's Four Shakespeare Songs and settings of Ben Jonson's Have You Seen but a Bright Lily Grow? and Robert Herrick's A Meditation for his Mistress, alongside six varied and vital songs by Rebecca Clarke, including The Seal Man, Inchone of her most soaring flights of imaginationInch, and Tate's Epitaph, in which her Inchquietly understated writing is masterlyInch.

Weist Lee - Luminous - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

This is an album of four contemporary works for soprano and piano. Three are by superb but less well-known, the fourth by Gyorgy Ligetti, who needs no introduction. These works are all beautifully performed by soprano Kirsten Ashley Wiest, and pianist Siu Hei Lee. Award-winning coloratura soprano Kirsten Ashley Wiest is firmly committed to the continuous evolution of classical vocal music. Her Inchbright, dazzling vocal techniqueInch (San Diego Story) has captured the attention of composers worldwide, resulting in numerous world premiere performances including works by James Erber (UK), Lei Liang (CN/US), Veronika Krausas (CA/US), Gérard Pape (FR), Rand Steiger (US), Jeffrey Holmes (US), Jack Van Zandt (US), and Annie Hsieh (AU), among many others. A London-based music researcher, pianist, scholar and teacher, Alvin/ Siu Hei has been praised for his extraordinary performance virtuosity and impressive balance in chamber music (Paul Muller, Sequenza21). As a researcher, he wrote on the commedia dell'arte character Pierrot and detailed the social and political meanings of the modernist character from the late 19th century onwards. As a native of Hong Kong and previously a resident of California, Siu Hei also studied the popular music of China and Hong Kong in the light of politics and postcolonialism, as well as contemporary music with a focus on Chinese American composers.

Various Artists - Dream - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

In his new GENUIN album, pianist Jürgen Geiger, who has appeared throughout Europe, explores the distinctions between composition, improvisation, creation, and re-creation. He presents virtuoso piano literature, including his own compositions and transcriptions. Among such arrangements are Saint-Saëns' Le rouet d'Omphale, one of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies, and Mendelssohn's Auf Flügeln des Gesangs. Geiger's own music follows in the tradition of his role models Leopold Godowsky and Vladimir Horowitz, both of whom are represented here. The young pianist performs them with outstanding technique and a great sense of sound. A truly opulent menu for the piano!
