About this product
This field recording begins to document the tradition of spoken and sung storytelling in Grenada, a small island in the Caribbean. Full of humor, stories are told in English or English patois by a number of male orators and describe society (while reflecting African roots), often using metaphorical allusions to animals. Interspersed with the tales are calypso songs sung in French Creole or English patois.

Whether purely instrumental or with a chorus, each of these recordings manages to capture the spirit of the English, Spanish, and French speaking Caribbean. Many of the recordings are of dance music as music and dance are commonly linked in Caribbean cultures. Representing fifteen countries this collection speaks to the vibrant nature of the West Indies where even a song like InchNous Allons DodoInch or InchWe're Going to SleepInch is anything short of a lullaby.
