About this product

Joachim Du Bellay (1522-1560) stormed onto the Parisian literary scene with the resounding avant-garde manifesto Défense et illustration de la langue française. Ronsard and Du Bellay are the great French poets of the sixteenth century, but while the former has been set to music hundreds of times, Du Bellay inspired only about thirty compositions. Denis Raisin Dadre and his ensemble Doulce Mémoire celebrate the Angevin poet on the occasion of his 500th anniversary with works by the leading composers of the period, among them Arcadelt (who set nine chansons to his texts, including Je ne puis dissimuler a year before Du Bellay's death), Lassus, Chardavoine and Verdonck. It was also established practice at the time to declaim poems accompanied by a musician who improvised on the lyre, an instrument and usage imported from Italy (recitare a la lira). Denis Raisin Dadre has decided to pay tribute to these sixteenth-century 'slammers' by asking a modern equivalent, Kwal, to 'slam' some of Du Bellay's sonnets, including the famous Heureux qui, comme Ulysse. Album Tracks 1. Qui Prestera la Parole 2. Heureux Qui, Comme Ulysse 3. Du Temps Que J'Estois Amoureux 4. Du Temps Que J'Estois Amoureux 5. Nuit Froyde et Sombre 6. O Foible Esprit 7. On Peut Faindre par le Cizeau 8. Hors Envyeux 9. Si Vous Regardez, Ma Dame 10. Work(s)~Si Vous Regardez, Ma Dame / Bransles / Si Vous Regardez, Ma Dame 11. En Ce Moys Delicieux 12. En Ce Moys Delicieux 13. En Ce Moys Delicieux 14. Seul et Pensif 15. Nuit M'Est Courte 16. Nuit M'Est Courte 17. Homme Vertueux Est Riche 18. Pavane 19. Cet' Humeur Vient de Mon Œil 20. Marcher D'Un Grave Pas 21. Je Te Souhaite pour T'Ebatre 22. Si Le Bien Qui Au Plus Grand Bien 23. Qui Voudra Voir 24. Je Ne Puis Dissimuler 25. Vieille Plus Vieille Que le Monde

Various Artists - Haute Contre de Lully - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Who was Louis Gaulard Dumesny? Dumesny was not the first haute-contre historically speaking, but he was the first to have become famous in his lifetime. Sources agree that he was a cook when Lully discovered him. He made his debut in 1677 and everyone was amazed by his acting, the power of his voice and also his ability to learn everything by ear, since he could not read music. A few centuries later, Reinoud Van Mechelen, star tenor of the international Baroque scene, has decided, with his ensemble A Nocte Temporis, to pay tribute to this 'haute-contre' register, a high tenor voice (not to be confused with the countertenor!), by devoting three recordings to it, paying tribute in turn to Lully, Rameau and Gluck. The first part of this trilogy therefore contains the finest operatic airs and suites by Lully, featuring excerpts from Isis, Persée, Armide, Amadis, Acis et Galatée and Achille et Polyxène, but also pieces by Marin Marais (Alcide), Marc-Antoine Charpentier (Médée), Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (Céphale et Procris), Henry Desmarets, Pascal Colasse, Charles-Hubert Gervais and André Cardinal Destouches. Album Tracks 1. Isis, LWV 54~Ouverture 2. Persée, LWV 60~Cessons de Redouter la Fortune Cruelle... 3. Armide, LWV 71~Plus J'Observe Ces Lieux, et Plus je Les Admire... 4. Amadis, LWV 63~Bois Épais, Redouble Ton Ombre... 5. Acis et Galatée, LWV 73~Faudra-t-il Encore Vous Attendre... 6. Acis et Galatée, LWV 73~Ritournelle 7. Achille et Polyxène, LWV 74~Patrocle va Combattre, et J'ai Pu Consentir... 8. Miserere, LWV 25~[excerpt] 9. Achille et Polyxène~Quand, Après un Cruel Tourment... 10. Achille et Polyxène~Entracte 11. Achille et Polyxène~Ah! Que Sur Moi... - Prélude 12. Alcide~Mon Amoureuse Inquiétude... 13. Alcide~Ne Pourrais-Je Trouver de Remède... 14. Thétis et Pelée~Ciel! En Voyant ce Temple Redoutable... 15. Various Artists - Compositrices Du Xxe Siecle - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Juliette Hurel and Hélène Couvert, who have long enjoyed a close rapport on the concert and on disc, here celebrate five French women composers at the turn of the twentieth century. Countess Clémence de Grandval was the composer of some sixty songs, of which Saint-Saëns said 'They would certainly be famous if their composer did not have what many people regard as the irremediable defect of being a woman.' Augusta Holmès earned the admiration of Liszt, Wagner and Saint-Saëns. To mark the Universal Exhibition of 1889, she composed a monumental work for more than a thousand musicians. During her studies at the Conservatoire, Mélanie Bonis fell madly in love with a singer, but had to marry a rich industrialist. She later returned to composition and used the pseudonym Mel Bonis, leaving her gender in doubt. Cécile Chaminade displayed extraordinary gifts at a very early age. Bizet called her 'My little Mozart'. Lili Boulanger received her first music lessons from her sister, the famous teacher Nadia. In 1913, at the age of nineteen, she became the first woman to receive the Prix de Rome. The word 'compositrice' was born! Album Tracks 1. Sonate~I. Andantino con moto 2. Sonate~II. Scherzo-Vivace 3. Sonate~III. Adagio 4. Sonate~IV. Finale-Moderato 5. Nocturne 6. D'un Matin de Printemps 7. Suite~I. Prélude 8. Suite~II. Scherzo 9. Suite~III. Menuet 10. Suite~IV. Romance 11. Suite~V. Final 12.
