With this programme of music for cello and piano, Steven Isserlis and Connie Shih transport us to the world immortalized in Marcel Proust's a la recherche du temps perdu - the Parisian high society and it's glittering salons. For the composers of the time these provided a perfect for the introduction of new works, performed by the finest musicians in France for a sympathetic, educated and rich (!) audience. And for the music-loving Proust they offered countless opportunities to meet the composers that he so admired (and others that he may have admired a bit less...) The first of these to make his appearance in the programme is no one less than Proust's one-time lover and lifelong friend, Reynaldo Hahn, with a brief set of Variations chantantes on a theme from a baroque opera. He is followed by Gabriel Faure, whose music Proust gushed about in a letter to the composer 'I could write a book more than 300 pages long about it.' Proust was less expansive about Saint-Saëns' music even if he admired him as a pianist, but the composer's First Cello Sonata is nevertheless the centrepiece of the programme, before Henri Duparc and Augusta Holmes make their appearance. These were both students of Cesar Franck, whose iconic Violin Sonata in A major (here in the version for cello) closes this programme of 'salon music' - in the best possible sense of the term.

Soirée captures the atmosphere of informal, domestic music making. Czech star mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená offers an intimate and highly personal collection of international songs together with an outstanding group of musical friends, including Sir Simon Rattle, who makes his recording debut as a pianist. The German lied is represented by Brahms (Two Songs, Op. 91 and Five Ophelia Songs, WoO 22) and Strauss (Morgen!), the French chanson by Chausson (Chanson perpétuelle) and Ravel (Chansons madécasses), and 20th-century avant-gardism with Stravinsky's Three Songs from William Shakespeare. In between these explorations, Kožená revisits her musical roots with a selection of Dvorák songs, arranged by Duncan Ward, as well as Janácek's Nursery Rhymes. Soirée is the second of Magdalena Kožená's exclusive collaboration with PENTATONE, after having presented the baroque cantatas recital album Il giardino dei sospiri in 2019.

Flanders Recorder Duo The name of the ensemble rightly suggests that it emerged from the Flanders Recorder Quartet, which ended it's incredibly successful international stage career in 2018. Already the FRQ amazed with the expressiveness of it's InchonlyInch 4 recorders. The Flanders Recorder Duo now takes this to the extreme. Really only two musicians are to be heard here, but often one hardly believes this when listening to the debut album, which is simply called InchFR2Inch. A highlight is certainly the world premiere of a suite by Vaughan Williams. But the other performances from various eras also give listeners plenty of opportunity to enjoy and be amazed.
