About this product

Music of the Dagomba from Ghana introduces listeners to music from one of the largest ethnic tribes in the northern region of Ghana. Drums are featured most prominently in Dagomba music, followed by stringed instruments. One of these, the gondze, is made of a hollowed gourd and covered with reptile skin. The characteristic feature of Dagomba gondze music is the repetitive melodic and rhythmic time lines that are played by both fiddlers and rattlers. Other instruments such as flutes are used less frequently, often as background to drum and string ensembles. The album includes harvest songs, praise and entertainment music, and warrior music. Liner notes explain the instrumentation, rhythmic structure, and social context. Album Tracks 1. Harvest Songs 2. Harvest Songs 3. Gondze Praise Music (2) 4. Gingeli Entertainment Music 5. Gingeli Entertainment Music 6. Flute Festival Music 7. Warrior Music

Brahms / Perry / Vardi / Zamora - Brahms: The Three Piano Trios - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Johannes Brahms was photographed frequently in his lifetime and took pleasure in candid photographs. In a professional portrait, the most notable feature is his powerful gaze. After 1876, Brahms received compliments for his eyes. One observer described them Inchfine brow with flashing blue eyes...Inch The Piano Trio No. 1 opens with the cello's radiant lyrical theme, establish B Major decisively without a hint that a somber B Minor mood would bring the work to a close. Violinist David Perry, cellist Uri Varid and pianist Paulina Zamora bring Brahms' gaze of these piano trios to life again. Album Tracks 1. I. Allegro 2. II. Andante Con Moto 3. III. Scherzo Presto 4. Various Artists - Ewe Music of Ghana / Various - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Among the Ewe of southeast Ghana, drummers must also be proficient dancers, and dancers are often required to become musicians as well. As evidenced on this recording, Ewe instrumentation is largely percussion-based and includes talking drum, double or single gong, and gourd rattle played in complex, polyrhythmic patterns. Instrumentation varies depending on the nature of the occasion (festival, funeral, etc). Liner notes include further cultural commentary from Seth Ladzekpo, the former drum-and-dance instructor at the Ghana Institute for Art and Culture. Album Tracks 2. Iritingo - Bowl Lyre 3. Various Artists - Ga People Ghana: Adowa 1 / Various - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

Volume I of Music of the Ga People of Ghana, recorded in 1971 and released in 1978, features recordings of Ga funeral music, called Adowa, which is also played for rulers holding court and the annual harvest festival honoring ancestors. Music is sung by ensembles organized by age and gender, with the most prominent singers in their middle and later years of life. This structure reflects the Ga belief that death is not the end of life; rather, the deceased is transformed into a spiritual, immortal being-a cause for celebration.
