About this product
The Choirs of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, with their director Edward Wickham, have collaborated once again for this album of Renaissance motets and hymns in praise of St Catharine - one of the most ubiquitous and beloved saints of the Middle Ages who also lends her name to the college (founded in 1473) where both groups are resident. This diverse programme spans a century in which the cult of St Catharine was at it's height, representing the prayers and exhortations of pious communities towards a saint who might represent their interests in the court of heaven. St Catharine's College lies at the historic centre of Cambridge and at the heart of the University's distinguished musical tradition. Founded in 1473, there has been a choir associated with the college for over a hundred years. The mixed student choir currently consists of around 24 undergraduate and graduate members, augmented by former choristers from the Girls' Choir; and sings regular services in the college's eighteenth century chapel. Album Tracks 1. Ave Katherina Martir 2. [Ave Katherina Martir] / Costi Regis 3. O Gemma Clarissima 4. Ave Virginum Gemma 5. Ave Virginum Gemma 6. Virgo Sancta Katherina 7. Virgo Sancta Katherina 8. In a score the viola part is generally used for middle voices; less usually for soloistic purposes. On the other hand, with it's dark velvet-like timbre and warm sound spectrum the viola possesses a distinguished charm. These characteristics were actually only disclosed at the end of the 19th century. Moreover, the technique of viola playing kept developing from then on constantly. Violists on their side, began to arrange shorter but very well-known pieces for their instrument themselves. What resulted was nothing less than little treasures, gems. Eberhard Klemmstein selected a number of these wonderful offers which he arranged partially himself and which, however, he had not yet recorded and published. Together with his pianist, Oda Schmidt, he goes on a stroll through the world of shorter encore pieces of the romantic and late-romantic eras. In the middle are placed the very rarely heard InchHebrew MelodiesInch by Joseph Joachim, originally written for the viola and Klemmstein's own Viola Sonata from 2013. Thus, the present album is a goldmine not only for fans of the viola but also for professionals, while being an enriching discovery for all lovers of classical music.
