Saxophonist par excellence Rolf-Erik Nystrøm is at the helm of Oriental Winds of the Baroque - exploring Baroque music through it's connections with the Orient, Africa, South-America and the Nordic regions. Biber, Merula and Monteverdi's passacaglias are as much a common denominator for interaction between different cultures as the blues. The European art music in the baroque era did not suddenly appear in a magic fountain in the centre of Europe around 1600. Quite the opposite; it developed through immigration, conquest, assimilation, curiosity and openness. Oriental Winds of the Baroque follow these lines backwards, open to what might turn up. Biber's re-tuning the strings and using improvisation in his music, is closely connected to how the folk musicians all over Europe worked, especially in Norway. Furthermore the tonality of the traditional religious songs in Norway, is sometimes similar to the way religious and other music is sung in the Middle East. Kouame Sereba's timeless vocals, dodo and kalimba can together with the Italian theorbo and the Norwegian traditional Hardanger fiddle give the listener associations to the curious intercultural meetings that became the origins to the later stylized baroque and classical music, and then in turn our other Western musical styles. The calm and breath in the music of Couperin is found in the aesthetics of the breath and space in the individual expressions of Sereba, Økland and Nystrøm.

New Baroque Sessions is Luc Beauséjour's second album of Baroque works played on the piano. It includes works by Jean-Sébastien Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, François Couperin, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Claude Balbastre. InchI have chosen a repertoire that I like and which, while being primarily intended for the harpsichord, lends itself well to interpretation on the pianoInch says Luc Beauséjour. Beauséjour's playing is inspired and sensitive and the program is wonderful. Essential! He is a highly sought-after musician not only for his virtuosity and the subtlety of his playing, but also for his outgoing personality and the ease with which he communicates with his audiences. Luc Beauséjour leads a very active concertizing career. He has performed as soloist in North and South America as well as in Europe. He was named Inch2003 Performer of the YearInch by the Conseil Québécois de la Musique and has won Félix awards for two different recordings at the Gala de l'ADISQ in Québec (2002 and 2006).

Simon Wallfisch writes of this new InchSupressed music (or 'Entartete Musik' or 'Verfemte Musik'), music and musicians smeared by the Nazis' dark, ideologically-motivated hatred, has developed into an artificial genre of it's own, throwing together composers of completely different musical backgrounds and, it must be said, varying degrees of quality, into the same bucket. This must change. We risk missing the true qualities, nuances and pedigree of individual composers' voices, as well as the cultural preoccupations that united them (as in the case of this album, the common fascination in the early twentieth century with translations of Chinese and Persian poetry). The deliberate inclusion of Richard Strauss (whose political allegiances are questionable) is because I wish the listener to hear beyond the names, beyond the painful historical facts and savor the incredible sound world created by these musical cousins. It is my wish that, by presenting all of these neglected composers as equals, we can begin to restore them to their rightful place, where they belonged all along, in our collective musical Consciousness.Inch
