KOTTOS takes it's name from an enchanting, dangerous giant of Greek mythology. The instrumental makeup of KOTTOS is unique recorders from the lowest bass to the highest sopranino; a grand Russian Bayan concert accordion; the cello, which adds sounds from the avant-garde and Nordic folk music; and a Greek bouzouki adding Mediterranean colour and Celtic sonorities. The songs and dances of European folk music inspired the late 19th and early 20th-century composers featured on this album, from Bartók to Vaughan Williams, and the journey takes us from the mountain tunes of Europe's northernmost tip to the melancholy songs of it's easternmost reaches, to dances from it's southernmost point. The group's eponymous debut album KOTTOS (2016) received the Listeners' Prize of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation's P2 station. The 500th anniversary of the death of Emperor Maximilian I this year is the occasion for several exhibitions and also for the programme of the ensemble Per-Sonat's new . Maximilian, who was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in 1508, was a great patron of the arts in addition to his warlike activities. Here the music was in his special interest and he brought the most important musicians of his time to his court Heinrich Isaac, Josquin des Pres, Paul Hofhaimer and Johannes Ockeghem. The artistic sacred music for Emperor Maximilian has already been widely published. The ensemble Per-Sonat, directed by Sabine Lutzenberger, consists exclusively of leading heads of the early music scene and now turns to secular music at Maximilian's court the songs, chansons and dances that document the emperor's love of music in a new way. Flutist, composer, and teacher Paul Taffanel (1844-1908) was to have a decisive influence on the development of chamber music for winds in France. In 1879 he founded the Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent (Society of Chamber Music for Wind Instruments). The organization's objective was to expand and promote chamber music repertoire for winds. On this recording, the Oslo Kammerakademi performs chamber works for winds by composers Charles Gounod, Charles Koechlin, Florent Schmitt, Théodore Gouvy, and Vincent d'Indy, several of which were composed for the Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent.
