About this product

Acrobat has devoted a number of collections over the years to anthologies of the biggest hits in different years and decades across different genres, and this one fills a particular gap in the catalogue, bringing together all the records which featured at No. 1 in all of Billboard's charts relating to the R&B market during the 1940s. In October 1942, Billboard launched the InchHarlem Hit ParadeInch, which was replaced in February 1945 by the InchMost Played Juke Box Race RecordsInch, to which in 1948 was added the InchBest Selling Retail Race RecordsInch. This 97-track 4-CD collection features every record which reached No. 1 in any of those charts, apart from a few which are unavailable for copyright reasons. We have also included those from 1950, as it is arguably the final year of the decade, and we had space in the 4-CD to accommodate them for the benefit of collectors who do not have our InchR&B No. 1s of the '50sInch set. The collection offers a fascinating spread of music, ranging across the spectrum of a genre which was continually evolving from big band music to solo singers, small group R &B and pure blues, with one or two artists like Louis Jordan and Nat King Cole maintaining a solid presence right through the decade. It's a hugely entertaining musical journey through what was a momentous decade socially and politically, in which R&B laid the groundwork for the arrival of the musical upheavals of the '50s. It contains a 12,000+ word booklet featuring background notes on every record as well as full discographical and chart information.

Various Artists - The Country No. 1s Of The '40s (Various Artists) - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The Country No. 1s Of The '40s - Acrobat already has on catalogue collections which present InchAmerica's No. 1s of the '50sInch (ACFCD7501), InchAmerica's No. 1s of the '40sInch (ACSCD6005), InchAmerica's R&B No. 1s of the '50sInch (ACSCD6003), InchAmerica's R&B No. 1s Of The '40sInch (ACQCD7168), and InchCountry No. 1s of the '50sInch (ACTRCD9034), and this completes that set with presenting the InchCountry No. 1s of the '40sInch. Billboard published it's first country chart in January 1944 under the name InchMost Played Juke Box Folk RecordsInch, becoming the InchMost Played Juke Box Hillbilly RecordsInch chart in 1947, and adding a Best Sellers chart the same year. In 1948 InchCountry & WesternInch replaced Hillbilly in the nomenclature, with a InchCountry & Western Records Most Played by Disk JockeysInch chart added in 1949. This 69-track 3-CD comprises records which made No. 1 in any of those three charts from the first chart in 1944 through to the end of 1950, apart from a couple which were unavailable for copyright reasons - it's always a moot point as to whether a year like 1950 is the last year of one decade or the first year of the next one. In this case, because so many records spent long periods at No. 1 during these years, there were rather fewer chart-toppers than one might expect, so we were able to include the 1950 No. 1s within the 3-CD set . As noted, the chart was often dominated by certain records, and Eddy Arnold in particular had an extraordinary run of success, spending many weeks at the top with several of his records, while one of two western swing artists like Bob Wills, Al Dexter and Tex Williams also having some long chart runs, with other big names of the era - Red Foley, Ernest Tubb and the emerging forces of Hank Snow and Hank Williams also featuring. It includes a 10,000-word booklet with notes on every record, and full chart inform
