About this product
During his thirteen years as chief conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra of SWR Sir Roger Norrington conducted and recorded an important part of Berlioz's core repertoire. The present boxed set brings together on seven CDs the Requiem, the opera Benvenuto Cellini (concert performance), the oratorio L'Enfance du Christ, the overture Les Francs-juges and of course the Symphonie fantastique. Norrington's style has caused a stir internationally with what has come to be termed 'The Stuttgart Sound' a synthesis of historically-informed performance practice with the technical capabilities of a modern orchestra. Whether in Mozart, Haydn, Bruckner or Berlioz, Norrington seeks to capture the performance experience of the time, adjusting the orchestra's size and seating plan to create an authentic sound without vibrato. Hector Berlioz had to surmount a variety of challenges before he was able to pursue his musical vocation. His father, a respected physician in the provincial South of France, was not readily willing to come to terms with his son's intention to quit his medical studies and turn instead to music. He therefore made all further financial support subject to Hector's climbing up the musical ladder at lightning speed. Alas, it didn't work so easily. Berlioz's road to success was tedious and marked by adversity and struggle, his personal life tumultuous. The uniqueness and originality of his musical style are no longer disputed, but this insight came at the end of a decades long process. Album Tracks 1. Les Francs-Juges - Ouverture Op. 3 2. Symphonie Fantastique Op. 14 3. L'enfance Du Christ - Trilogie Sacrée Op. 25 - Première Partie Le Songe D'hérode 4. Deuxième Partie La Fuite en Égypte 5. Troisième Partie L'arrivée À Sais 6. In November 1949, at the age of eight, Idil Biret entered the studios of ORTF (Radiodiffusion Television Francaise) in Paris and made her first recordings; these were works by Couperin, Bach, Beethoven and Debussy. In the following decades she made nearly 100 LPs and CDs, released on ten record labels (Pretoria, Vega, Decca, Atlantic/Finnadar, Pantheon, EMI, Naxos, Marco Polo, Alpha, BMP) and many recordings for radio and television stations around the world. These included the complete piano works of Brahms, Chopin and Rachmaninoff as well as the Sonatas of Boulez and the Etudes of Ligeti. The Idil Biret Archive (IBA) is now bringing together her past and present recording; as the copyrights are obtained, old recordings no longer available commercially are being released together with her new recordings. The transcriptions by Liszt of Beethoven's Symphonies, originally recorded for EMI, and the newly recorded 32 Sonatas and all the Piano Concertos of Beethoven were released by IBA and also made available in a box set. All the Piano Concertos of Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Schumann and Grieg and the nine LPs recorded for Atlantic/Finnadar in New York which include works by Boulez, Webern, Berg, Ravel and Stravinsky were also released. Among the recent new releases are Liszt's Etudes and the piano transcription of Berlioz's Harold en Italie, Schumann's Carnaval, Fantasie and other works, all five Piano Concertos of Hindemith and, in the Archive Edition, the early LPs made in France for Pretoria (Schumann, Brahms), Vega (Bartok, Prokofiev, Brahms, Beethoven) and Decca (Rachmaninoff). IBA is distributed worldwide by Naxos. Album Tracks 1. Djinns 2. Variations symphoniques 3. Prélude, Choral et Fugue~Prélude 4. Prélude, Choral et Fugue~Choral 5. Prélude, Choral et Fugue~Fugue 6. This album contains the symphonic suite InchScheherazadeInch by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and the short composition InchThe Enchanted LakeInch by his student Anatoly Lyadov. In 1887-88, after the sudden death of his brilliant friend Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov composed those three orchestral works which crowned his Russian national period and has made his name a permanent part of the worldwide concert repertoire the InchCapriccio espagnoInchl, the symphonic suite InchScheherazadeInch, and the concert overture InchLa Grande Pâque RusseInch. With Scheherazade Rimsky-Korsakov did not tell a story, he rather set individual, unconnected episodes and images to music. Anatoly Lyadov has a reputation of being lazy - based solely on Rimsky-Korsakov's opinion of him - yet his ambition was for every piece of music he created to be flawless. One consequence of this was that his entire œuvre consists entirely of miniatures. The InchEnchanted LakeInch does not tell a story but is purely impressionistic music about a Russian forest lake, on a level with Ravel and Debussy. Conductor Dmitri Kitayenko conducted various orchestras in Moscow, became chief conductor of the Moscow Philharmonic in 1976, and took over the Symphony Orchestra of the Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt am Main in 1990-96. He went on to hold principal positions with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bern Symphony Orchestra, the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul and finally, in addition to his worldwide activities as a guest conductor, was appointed Honorary Conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra in Cologne. Album Tracks 1. The Sea and Sinbad's Ship [11 29] 2. II. the Kalender Prince [14 01] 3. III. the Young Prince and the Young Princess [12 11] 4. IV. Festival at Baghdad - the Sea - the Ship Breaks Against a Cliff Surmounted By a Bronze Horseman [13 50] 5. Volshebnoye Ozero (The Enchanted Lake), Op. 62
