Verdelot / Ganassi / Dadre - Madrigali Diminuiti - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

The frottola genre derived from the oral tradition of executing variations on existing melodies. Above all they were compositions with several strophes and gradually became a cultivated practice, as it was linked to the virtuoso capacities of singers and 'cantori al liuto (singing lutenists). It came to be expressed in three- or four-part compositions where the first part stood out it carried the melody and it's variations, with as counterpoint a tenor, still quite melodic, a supporting bassus and altus, and the least cantabile of all the voices, which interplayed with the tenor. Barbara Zanichelli was born in Parma, where she earned her diploma at the conservatory in violin before going on to study voice with the Russian teacher Anatoli Goussev in Milan. She furthered her studies of performance practice in baroque music with Cristina Miatello, Claudine Answermet and Roberto Gini. She is joined here by Italian-Swiss lutenist Luca Pianca, who has been championing his instrument since the early 1980s. Album Tracks 1. Venite Amanti (Isabella D'este Private Music) 2. The Second Book of Madrigals of Carlo Gesualdo provides the focal point for the latest in La Compagnia del Madrigale's stunning reappraisals of the glories of the Italian madrigal on Glossa. Probably written by Gesualdo between the time of the double honour killing of his first wife and her lover and his subsequent remarriage, the second book presents a sophisticated compositional mastery quite in keeping with the later books, albeit offering a calmer and gentler approach compared to the more tortured and twisted musical and psychological turns found in the last books. Notwithstanding, much is required from the singers on the Secondo libro di madrigali a cinque voci and La Compagnia del Madrigale bring their much- praised sensitivity to the text, balance of ensemble and dynamic control. In the booklet, both Marco Bizzarini and Giuseppe Maletto investigate the state of mind of this fascinating composer, over four centuries since his death. The substantial second part to this recording offers a set of contrasts with Book 2 nine tracks devoted to madrigalists inspired by Gesualdo's style, from contemporaries in Nenna, Macque and Palazzotto Tagliavia to the later Sigismondo d'India. A veritable bonus! Album Tracks 1. Secondo Libro Di Madrigali a Cinque Voci, 1594 2. Se Per Lieve Ferita 3. Non Mi Toglia Il Ben Mio 4. Se Così Dolce È Il Duolo 5. Se Taccio, Il Duol S'avanza 6.
