Budai is a semi-historical Chinese monk who is venerated as deity in Chinese Buddhism and Japanese Buddhist pantheon. His name refers to the sack that he carries around, his jolly nature and eccentric lifestyle distinguishes him from other Buddhist figures. Budai is always shown smiling or laughing, hence his other name “The laughing buddha”. Budai (Hotei) is a member of the Japanese Seven Lucky Gods, he is the god of fortune, guardian of the children, patron of diviners and barmen, also the god of popularity.
