About This Item

A bittersweet nostalgia lies at the heart of Imaginary People, the new album from indie roots duo Viv & Riley. Over ten tracks, the pair applies an indie folk sheen to pop gems, a reworking of an ancient ballad, and even an original fiddle tune, deftly weaving together the old and new. In contrast to the sunny, rich production, the lyrics lean melancholic. Both musicians trace their original artistic inspiration to the deep roots music they learned in their youths on opposite sides of the country. The duo's continuing musical expansion is in part the fruition of their new home of Durham, NC which is known for it's cross-genre collaboration and creatively articulated roots music. However, the track list is still peppered with pedal steel and the rootsy fiddle and banjo trappings the pair employed to acclaim on their previous two releases. As much as Imaginary People looks back to nostalgic yesteryears, it importantly marks the beginning of a new direction for these songwriting virtuosos. Album Tracks 1. Kygers Hill 2. Sauvie Island 3. The General 4. Imaginary People 5. Flashing Lights 6. How to Lose 7. Chance Creek 8. The Long Way 9. The Blackest Crow

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders - VINYL LP
    4.6(47)

The album Tribe Called Quest wanted to make from the very beginning. It's their most even, consistent album of the original trilogy that also includes People's Instinctive Travels... and the Low End Theory. But in spite of this, or maybe because of it, it's also their most uninteresting. With so many competent tracks, there's no chance for something to stand out above the pack, like InchScenarioInch did on Low End Theory or InchCan I Kick ItInch did on People's Instinctive Travels. The celebration is there (InchStir It UpInch), the jazz drums kick (InchOh My GodInch), and the stand-up bass dribbles, keeping perfect pace with Q-Tip's unmistakable mic-touch (InchElectric RelaxationInch). There's even a Native Tongues armistice/reunion with de la Soul (InchAwards TourInch). Although it comes together like a seamless tutorial in jazz hip-hop style, it comes together so damn well that it's hard for any one track to excel, cursing the album with consistent quality. Album Tracks 1. Midnight Marauders Tour Guide 2. Steve Biko (Stir It Up) 3. Award Tour 4. 8 Million Stories 5. Sucka Nigga 6. Midnight 7. We Can Get Down 8. Electric Relaxation 9. Clap Your Hands 10. Oh My God 11. Keep It Rollin' 12. Chase, Pt. 2 13. Lyrics to Go 14. God Lives Through

Deftones - Around the Fur - VINYL LP
    4.6(12)

Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening InchMy Own Summer (Shove It),Inch serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternate with fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression. This LP version comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Album Tracks 1. My Own Summer (Shove It) 2. Lhabia 3. Mascara 4. Around the Fur 5. Rickets 6. Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) 7. Lotion 8. Dai the Flu 9. Headup 10. MX
