About this product
The caliber of the Nishizaki-Loeb partnership is outstanding. They provide expressive playing that is light and delicate. Their performances overflow with imagination and a high degree of intimacy. Nishizaki is highly experienced and has sold possibly the most recordings of any violinist. She has the advantage of a technique that is comfortably secure with a pleasing tone that is crisp and cool. There is a purity to her playing, fused with a relaxed manner that is hard to resist. The elaborate piano part in the hands of Loeb is natural and unforced. The duo's choice of speeds tends to be rather on the slow side for my taste. However, in the allegro of K570 (track 6) the players demonstrate that they can quicken when they choose. I especially enjoyed their sensitive performance of the adagio of the Sonata K570 which is tender and highly compelling. Also impressive is the closing movement rondo of the same Sonata, dazzlingly played with joy and vitality, and totally free of affectation. Something special is also happening in the Sonata, K403 at several points in the allegro - allegretto (track 4) especially at points 1.27-2.11; 3.30-4.09 and 5.18-6.26 where the unison playing is exceptional.

Japanese violinist Takako Nishizaki (the daughter of the cofounder of the Suzuki Method, we learn) gets top billing on this disc, part of a complete series of Mozart's sonatas for violin and piano. But for much of the disc, American pianist Benjamin Loeb actually has more to do. The Sonata No. 16 for violin and piano, K. 547, is subtitled Incha little piano sonata for beginners, with a violin.Inch Written around the same time as the Piano Sonata in C major, K. 545, that most young pianists learn, this work lacks the unity of it's more famous counterpart. By this point in his career, Mozart was writing violin-and-piano sonatas in which the two instruments played equal roles, but the act of writing a student work seems to have made the composer think in the old-fashioned terms of a piano sonata with optional violin. The K. 547 sonata and the 12 Variations in G major on the French song InchLa bergère Célimène,Inch K. 359 are rarely heard, and it's useful for violinists to have them on hand. But the rather dry performance by Nishizaki and Loeb doesn't catch their easy charm. On the other hand, the pair delivers a very strong performance of the one real masterwork on the disc, the concluding Sonata No. 15 in A major, K. 526.. Performing on conventional instruments, they sound somewhat like the classic duo of Henryk Szerying and Ingrid Haebler, seeking smoothness and balance in Mozart over sentimental effect. In the dense, difficult A major sonata, their approach is well considered and nicely executed. This would be an odd choice for a single disc of Mozart violin-and-piano sonatas, but as part of a series it scores well with the major work on the program.

This Naxos recording has put together a beautiful presentation by two accomplished musicians who complement each other so perfectly. Nishizaki Takako delivers a spirited, lively, and peppy performance which pairs very well with Jando, who also delivers the right light and spritely touch for these early (pre-sturm and drang), Beethoven pieces. Nishizaki's renditions are an excellent and enjoyable way to round out your Beethoven repertoire, Here the piano provides the niches for Nishizaki's winning, sweet violin sound that delightfully reaches us with it's charm and beauty.
