Wilder Woods - Curioso - VINYL LP

Bear Rinehart unveiled Wilder Woods in 2019, releasing a neo-soul record that focused on new beginnings the advent of fatherhood, the launch of his solo career, and the updated branding of a longtime bandleader who'd decided to expand his reach. With FEVER / SKY, he widens Wilder Woods' cinematic sound while celebrating the parts of himself that made him most proud. It's a personal, poignant record whose songs focus not upon the horizon ahead, but upon the road itself, stacked high with heartland hooks, western wooziness, southern soul, and festival-worthy anthems. The Bewilder duo have been playing together for over a decade now. From The Eyrie is their debut LP though and it feels fresh with the urgency of a young band's first demo balanced with the precision and maturity that only time together can bring. To be sure, there are reference points-American Football, Mineral, Carissa's Wierd-but the whole is far more than the sum of it's influences. From the Eyrie has the comfort of a record you've loved your whole life in a package that feels wholly new.1. Heavy Sweater2. By The River3. Twin Lakes4. Way Away5. Breaking6. Home7. An Education8. Rooted in the Philadelphia experimental music and acid-folk revival scene of the early 2000's, Woodwose neither fits comfortably into said scene nor any musical movement current or past. While their sound can be described as primitive, in the sense of the primordial, not in terms of playmanship, their folk-horror aesthetic abuts a pop sensibility that undermines pure thrift in either genre. What results is a wholly unique sound that permeates one's physiognomy like poison from a deliciously enchanted apple.Keyboardist/flautist/vocalist Jessica Weeks (Magus, The Valerie Project) and guitarist/vocalist Gillian Chadwick (Ex Reverie, Rusalnaia) together draw from a storied musical past to infuse a new creation whose iteration defies ease of labeling. Dueting vocals clamber and soar, guitars stab and arpeggiate, keys rumble and swoon as the rough beast that is Woodwose's debut long-player stands upright, ready to be born into the world.
