After the big success of the album FLOW we have here new recordings that are completely different from the previous ones in one respect. Here, the duo of Axel Wolf and Hugo Siegmeth plays exclusively their own pieces. They do not resort to classical material from jazz or 'standards' of Early Music, but only to ones that are unfamiliar. For they are pieces that emerged spontaneously nothing but duo improvisations, most of which were recorded on one and the same day in a Bavarian Radio studio in Munich. The lutenist Axel Wolf and the saxophonist Hugo Siegmeth who join forces here are two musicians with roots in completely different musical disciplines. A virtuoso on the lute and theorbo, Axel Wolf specializes in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, whereas Hugo Siegmeth, saxophonist and composer, is an expert on modern jazz and contemporary music. Although several centuries lie between the heydays of both musical styles, these two musicians both place special focus on improvisation involvement in the surprising moment and spontaneous interaction.

Ernst Wilhelm Wolf's contemporaries called him the InchWeimar Wolf,Inch a fitting tag, inasmuch as Weimar's musical environment greatly influenced the life of this teacher, concertmaster, and organist who advanced to the post of chapel master to Duchess Anna Amalia, a noted patron of the arts. Even though he was a thorn in the flesh for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Germany's prince of poets, he remained true to the court and his duchess over the decades. He even declined with thanks an offer from the King of Prussia, Frederick II, to succeed Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach in Berlin. However, the fact that Wolf highly valued Bach's empfindsamer Stil and the style of the Berlin chapel master Carl Heinrich Graun is clearly audible in his works. During recent years Wolf's instrumental music has attracted increasing attention. Now Michael Alexander Willens has recorded Wolf's oratorio Jesu, deine Passion will ich jetzt bedenken. In this work, like Graun in his Tod Jesu, the composer, who in 1756 was only a little over twenty, reflects on the Passion of Christ and relives it with deep emotion. An absolute masterpiece from the age of musical sensibility with arias of great melodic appeal that are guaranteed to leave no heart unmoved!

This interpretation of Die Winterreise is certainly unusual. Here, there is no singer; instead, the text is recited. The music still allows Schubert's themes and motifs to ring out, but it treats them with complete freedom. The instrumental timbres are also different tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone and bass clarinet exchange with lute and theorbo. Axel Wolf and Hugo Siegmeth join narrator Stefan Hunstein on an introspective journey that is finely connected, both musically and interpretively. Die Winterreise is about human existence, about a redefinition of one's position after a setback, when someone who has been rejected reflects on his life, surrounded by cold and darkness. This recording reflects an interplay between faithfulness to the original and freedom of expression, creating a personal world of winter travel that resembles a musical-text radio play.
