The mind of Bryan Fuller is a quirky, beautiful place.

Bryan Fuller does have quite an imagination, but unfortunately all his series tend to be the same. Now - I'm a big fan of Pushing Daisies and Dead Like Me, but I do get bored with seeing the same thing over and over. While George was lovable on Dead Like Me, Jaye on Wonderfalls is not so easily likable. Obviously she's written mean, but the actress had trouble pulling it off (even if she is pretty). But as the episode go on, you do grow to love her. But that is a common problem with Bryan Fuller's shows - you need to watch several episode before you can get into them. The first episode never "hooks" the audience. But unfortunately, Wonderfalls only aired 4 episodes. The episodes that weren't aired are really good. Mostly because they begin to focus on Jaye's family more. They were really interesting. Actually, the show would have been really good without the gimmicks. I think the only reason he set it in Niagara Falls was for the cool theme song and show title. But apparently everyone who worked on that show had never been to Niagara Falls. There were a few mistakes: Niagara Falls is not Canada, Native Americans are First Nation, and stun guns are illegal in NY -- Sharon wouldn't risk her legal career by carrying & using stun guns. I like that Jaye has a fancy degree, but she just works in retail. That rings true for a lot of people I know. Of course, the difference is – Jaye chooses to work in retail. And for someone who chooses to work there, she sure complains a lot about it. Jewel Staite looks terrible in here! I didn’t realize she had a Picasso face. But there is one good guest star – Patricia Zentilli. She’s so beautiful and so funny! She was the highlight of the show! Lee Pace is also a joy to watch as Jaye’s brother. The mouth-breather was also a riot! But they missed out by not having actors from the Niagara Falls area. Even as guest stars, they could have had Christine Baranski, Wendy Malick, John Lithgow, David Boreanaz, Chad Michael Murray, Nick Bakav, Vinnie Gallo (that’s a stretch), or Suzanne Cryer. I point this out because Bryan Fuller bragged about hiring Canadian actors. It struck me as odd because it was set in America, not Canada, regardless from where it was filmed. All shows filmed in Canada have Canadian actors so I don’t understand his point, unless he was claiming Canadian actors make the show more authentic – which it doesn’t. It is never explained why inanimate animals talked to Jaye. I don't think Fuller knew either, so he's lucky the show was canceled. The last episode is okay. Although it explains nothing, it does finish off the series well enough. So, if you want a silly, fairy-tale–like series, then you won’t be disappointed. But you’d still be better off with Pushing Daisies.

This is the entire series of Wonderfalls which includes unaired episodes. Yes it is quirky and strange but it is truly a gem which should be seen. Everyone in my family very much enjoyed the series and lamented in how so wonderful a show could be cancelled so quickly. It is the problem where everything has to be derivative to be successful apparently. I suppose perhaps the recent series "Pushing Daisies" is trying to do somewhat of what this series did but I like Wonderfalls much more. If you just are looking for another of the same and can't let yourself go perhaps this series is not for you but this short-lived series is absolutely one of the best shows I have ever seen. The extras and commentary are great as the actors and creators tell some great stories about making the episodes.
