About this product
A soloist's career path can often be a lonely one, especially for an exceptional instrumental soloist like Felix Klieser. It is then all the more inspiring when over the course of many years playing together, there is the opportunity to build and nurture close artistic and personal contacts with other musicians. Felix Klieser's concerts with the Prague-based Zemlinsky Quartet therefore are understandably among his annual favorites, as they present an opportunity for the five musicians to come together and to show that many years of music-making together has forged them into much more than just another artistic ensemble. InchI have played so much and so often with the Zemlinsky Quartet, and so we wanted to record a program of music together,Inch he explains. What could be more suitable for such a project than Mozart and Haydn? InchThe Horn Quintet is a real favorite of mine, in fact it may be the piece I like to play most,Inch is the hornist's reaction to Mozart's chamber works for the instrument. He has amply proved that he is very fond indeed of Mozart, having already recorded the Horn Concertos of Wolfgang Amadeus. Now comes the Quintet. InchIt is such great fun to play this music. It's like being a child in a sweet shop who is told 'you're allowed to pick up anything and you can eat as much as you like.' You go tumbling from one mood into another, interchanging between unbounded jubilation and deepest despair in the space of two bars; you really have to be on your toes - it's intensive stuff.Inch

GENUIN fans have already admired the horn playing skills of Christoph Eß on many occasions, including in the albums of German hornsound, the celebrated ensemble founded by Christoph Eß. Now the solo hornist of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra presents four effervescent, lively and soulful concertos by Mozart with the Folkwang Chamber Orchestra, perfectly laid out and light as a feather. With his colleagues from German hornsound, he plays-as an encore, so to speak-a quartet of Madsen with tongue-in-cheek and breathtaking virtuosity. Horn couldn't be better! Christoph Eß is considered today one of the leading hornists of his generation. In addition to his work as solo horn of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, he is a laureate of numerous international competitions and also appears as a sought-after soloist and chamber musician.

It is difficult to ascertain how many horn concertos Joseph Haydn and his younger brother Michael actually wrote. Certain works are lost; others are erroneously ascribed, or their authenticity at least doubtful. One of the concertos has even been ascribed by different musicologists to Joseph and to Michael Haydn, but it may have been written by another person entirely. The two brothers wrote most of their concertos for the widest variety of solo instruments, but usually in the same type of situation i.e. once they had assumed important posts at the head of renowned court orchestras. Joseph Haydn became Kapellmeister for the Esterhazy princes in 1761, and Michael became concertmaster of the Salzburg archdiocese court orchestra in 1763. The court musicians in both orchestras were virtuosos in their own right, and one of the tasks of a Kapellmeister consisted in composing new works that permitted them to display their outstanding abilities in the presence of their sovereigns.
