About this product

Copenhagen / Cologne-based songwriter (and former student of Jenny Hval) Zola Mennenöh joins Shahzad Ismaily's figureight records for the of her eloquent debut album Longing for Belonging. Known - and highly in demand - as a session musician in her native Germany and her adoptive second homes in Denmark and Norway, Zola Mennenöh is a singer, guitarist, flautist and sound artist of huge talent. She has toured the world over, specialising in jazz, improvisation and experimental & avant garde choral music, both as a performer and as composer. It is through this experience and years of honing that Longing for Belonging comes into existence. Her debut solo album is a collection of delicate treasures graceful, expressive and elegantly poised, exploring the great depth of her abilities as a musician and the cultured poetry of her lyrics. Zola's music touches on pastoral alternative folk, while splashes of classical decoration (such as the yearningly beautiful sea of undulating woodwind at the end of InchI Will Always Be Yours, ForeverInch) and melodic licks borrowed from jazz help illuminate unexpected corners. There is, in abundance, a songwriting sophistication in the mold of PJ Harvey or Beth Orton, a Southern Gothic shadow comparable to Neko Case and Nina Nastasia, and an omnivorous musical awareness that could stand alongside Cat Power's varied arrangements. Thematically, the album meditates on the search and discovery of personal and emotional unity. InchIt is an attempt to encounter and ultimately become one's true self,Inch Zola writes. The record is largely performed by a core quartet of Zola, Nicole Hogstrand (viola da gamba), Johanna Borchert (prepared piano) and Szymon Pimpon Gasiorek (drumkit / percussion).

Traxman - Da Mind of Traxman - COMPACT DISCS [CD]

2012 from Chicago House/Dance DJ/producer Cornelius Ferguson AKA Traxman. His unique brand of Footwork is very strongly rooted in Chicago's history of Soul, Funk, House and Ghetto Trax; he's a veteran and renowned crate-digger who has provided sample sources for many of Footwork's classic tracks over the years. His deep knowledge of music makes him one of the city's most versatile and skilled DJs and producers. Traxman's own productions are an incredibly well-rounded suture between Hip Hop's natural Funk and resourceful sample flipping; the hyper-kinetic innovation of Footwork's stop-start, half-time to double-speed drum programming; and a deep respect and understanding of Chicago's House music past that few producers can match. Da Mind of Traxman is a testament to this man's skills.

Belong - Common Era - VINYL LP

It's been five years since the last Belong long player, as the duo works slowly to organize their sound works. Both the time invested, and the wait, have been well rewarded with this return. Common Era shows extraordinary progression from that first album of dense, scorched earth instrumentals, hints of a new direction having been revealed on the Colorless Record EP from 2008 which contained covers of four should-have-been classics from the original psychedelic era. The new material has such common pop elements as InchsongsInch, vocals and drum machines, but the results could hardly be called conventional and are like little else happening on the current InchsceneInch. The songs themselves are akin to radio transmissions received from another time and place, just as likely to be the future as the past, or even from a contemporary alternate universe. They are both passionate and dispassionate, grey yet technicolor, ghostly and palpable, distant yet immediate, grainy and focused. Upon listening these conceptual contradictions are dismissed with ease, as the recordings reveal that they fit all of these descriptors simultaneously, an extraordinary balancing act.
