The best value in handheld gaming

I own many PC handhelds and the Acer Predator Atlas 8 is the best value in handhelds. Ergonomics, controls , performance and audio are all top notch. The only negatives I would say are the shape do the Dpad and currently the predator sense software needs some tweaking. If you are torn between an Asus handheld or something else get the Acer predator atlas 8! You will NOT be disappointed the handheld comes with a screen protector and a case . I added some grip tape to mine to give me more grip.

Great Gaming & Productivity Portable Machine

_______ *Pros: -Ergonomically well-designed. Comfortable. -The 8” 1920x1200 IPS display is bright, crisp, and supports VRR up to 120Hz. -The joysticks are TMR (no drifting) and precise. -Audio is loud and clear. -Performance from the Intel Arc G3 Extreme and Arc B390 is very good. -Good battery life (80Whr). -Wi-Fi 7. -Two Thunderbolt ports. -PredatorSense app is intuitive and easy to use. -Comes with a nice hard case and a screen protector. -Great value. _______ *Neutral: -The X, Y, A, B face buttons feel a bit cheap. -The D-pad feels a bit mushy. _______ *Cons: -None The Acer Predator Atlas 8 is my first handheld PC gaming system, and I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I actually enjoyed using it although I’ve had handheld gaming consoles before. Having already witnessed the power of the Intel Arc B390 from my daughter’s Acer Swift 16 laptop, I knew it was a capable GPU solution that can play most games, including AAA titles, at 1080P or 1200P with many eye candy settings toggled on. After playing three recent AAA titles on the Atlas 8, I’m now a big fan of this formfactor and the growing potential of this market segment. *** Design and Build Quality *** Once I got the Atlas 8 out of the premium-looking and slick packaging into my hands, I was impressed by how solid and durable it felt. The plastic in the areas where your hands wrap around feel smooth and hard, and the area out back where your fingers rest are textured for grip and stability. The device feels comfortable overall and the weight distribution is well-balanced. The TMR joysticks feel great, and they require just the right amount of actuation force when pressing down on them. All four shoulder buttons feel clickity and great as well, with the L2 and R2 buttons being especially nice since they’re dual-mode hall effect triggers (you can toggle between long-travel mode and mouse-click mode). Unfortunately, my praise for the buttons stops there. The D-pad feels mushy as do the X, Y, A, B face buttons, and they feel kind of cheap like on a $30 gamepad. I’m probably spoiled by my high-end game pads where mechanical microswitches are used everywhere and the D-pad is made of metal, but I did have a higher expectation from a handheld PC at this price point. Despite how those buttons felt, they functioned well during the heat of gaming, and I didn’t have any issues with responsiveness or wobbliness. At the center of the Atlas 8 is an expansive 8” IPS touch display with 1920 x 1200 resolution, and it’s a great screen. It’s super bright (up to 500 nits) with no light bleeds, and the Gorilla Glass Victus with its anti-reflective coating does an excellent job fighting glares. With variable refresh rate (VRR) up to 120Hz, it delivered smooth and flicker-free frames in all the games I played. The audio surprised me with its loudness and clarity coming out from such a small device. When playing games late at night with everyone else asleep, I really had to lower the volume down to the teens because the speakers were so loud. There are two Thunderbolt USB-C ports, and I use one of them to plug in the 65W charger and the other to connect to a dock, which in turn connects to my living room TV. Because the Atlas 8 has powerful components – the 14-core, 14-thread Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor (Panther Lake), Intel Arc B390 graphics with 12 Xe cores, 512GB PCIe 4.0 NVME drive, and 24GB of LPDDR5X memory – the Atlas 8 can be used like a full-fledge PC once connected to a dock and to a bigger screen. Geekbench test results further cemented the point that the Atlas 8 is a premium Intel Ultrabook inside a handheld formfactor. In Geekbench 6, it scored 2608 single-core and 13,863 multi-core. In Geekbench 7, it scored 2354 single-core and 14,607 multi. For OpenCL, the GPU scored 49,279 and 43,128 in Vulkan. Despite these high-performance components, the fans kept the temperatures under control and never became too loud. Off the charger, the 80Whr battery provided pretty decent gaming times – about 2 & ½ to 3 hours when running the Atlas 8 in the 35W Turbo mode and 120Hz refresh rate. Overall, Acer did an exceptional job with the Atlas 8. It’s comfortable, the screen and speakers are great, and it’s very performant at both HD gaming and general productivity tasks. It’s just a shame about the mushy D-pad and cheap-feeling face buttons. *** Gaming Performance *** I’m playing three games right now – The Witcher 3 Remastered, Castlevania Belmont’s Curse, and The Blood of Dawnwalker – and all but The Blood of Dawnwalker ran very well without any special tweaks at the 35W Turbo mode. The Witcher 3 Remastered supports both XeSS and XeFG (frame gen) and I was able to play at the Atlas’s native resolution (1200P) with Graphics preset set to High with ray tracing turned off with frames averaging in the high 50s. In order to run Blood of Dawnwalker at 1200P with Graphics set to High, I had to install OptiClick and enable DLSS and 3x DLSS framegen, which resulted in FPS in the high 70s, making the game not only very smooth and playable but also good-looking. By plugging into the wall or a dock and manually increasing the power limit to 40W, a few more frames can be extracted from games. The Arc G3 Extreme and Arc B390 are a powerful duo, and Acer did good going with the Intel Panther Lake system. *** Is it worth the coin? *** Yes. If you’re seeking a powerful and portable gaming machine that can play AAA games at HD resolution with a great screen and comfortable ergonomics, then I don’t think you can do better than the Predator Atlas 8 right now. Handhelds like the Atlas 8 are luxury items, for sure, but they offer access to your gaming library from practically anywhere – the couch, the bed, on the train or plane, you get the point. Overall, I give the Predator Atlas a 4.7 out of 5. It’s a Win!

    Power, Portability, and Versatility

The Acer Predator Atlas 8 gaming handheld is a well-designed portable powerhouse. It is built ergonomically, comes with a large screen, and has a great battery life. What’s included? The console comes with a charging cable, a heavy-duty case, and a screen protector. *Build* This gaming handheld is hefty and large. The hand grips are ergonomic and allow for a stable grip while playing and carrying it. The screen is large enough for visually satisfying gameplay. The WUXGA screen provides a stunning display that is crisp and vibrant. *Controls* The power button is really mushy and takes some getting used to. It is hard to know how long to keep it pressed and does not always seem to respond to turn on or put it to sleep. It is one of the things I find most frustrating about it. The power button doubles as a fingerprint sensor and can be used to log-in to the system. As for the controls: - The D-pad is very quiet and mushy. - The ABXY buttons are clicky and akin to a standard Xbox controller. - The TMR joysticks provide great stability, control, and accuracy with movement and I have not noticed a discernable deadzone. - The bumper buttons are quiet and clicky, while the trigger buttons are quiet and mushy with adjustable travel. - The rear macros are clicky and easily accessible, yet far enough and tall enough that there is no risk of accidentally pressing them. The device has vibration that is a low and quiet but strong rumble. *Fans* There are two strong fans that run fairly quietly and don’t blow too hot. I actually have not had any instance where the Atlas 8 has felt notably hot. The fans are adjustable in the settings. *Gameplay* There currently is a limit to which games are compatible with handhelds. Hopefully more games hop on in the near future. Most games that are compatible were just as functional as any other device – Xbox or PC. I did have one game that froze every time. Load times, graphics, and response were comparable. I actually had an easier time with certain games on the handheld than I do on the Xbox and PC, that’s just me and I don’t know exactly why. It may be that having a smaller screen helps me focus better. My testing marked both the fps and Hz at 120. During gameplay, I usually stayed at around 60fps. So far, I have not noticed any lag or glitching, though Rocket Legue does tend to distort the screen. Even when I click out of it, if it is still running, the other windows will be magnified. I know this is a Rocket League issue though because it does this on my laptop as well. Just putting it out there in case it happens with anyone else, it is the game that is failing to adapt to certain screen sizes. *App* The PredatorSense app provides an easy, streamlined, and intuitive way to change settings quickly between games. It has two ways to access setting changes, one through a shortcut type widget and I find they both come in handy. *Audio* The audio can go up surprisingly high in this handheld. It has decent sound as well, though nothing special. Some headphones would still be required to get tactical advantage in fps games. *Battery Life* The battery life varies by game, settings, and background tasks. On most days, I am able to get from 2-4 hours before needing a charge, which I find reasonable for a handheld. It charges up pretty quick too, in less than an hour if it is not in use. *Conclusion* The Atlas 8 gives you the power of a gaming pc that can fit in the palm of your hands. The battery life and quick charging remove the need to be stuck by a wall to play your favorite games, the components are powerful enough to make it worthwhile and fun, and the device is designed well enough to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. I am truly loving the portability and the versatility this provides.

The full package for portable PC gaming

I have been wanting a handheld PC gaming device for a long time, just hadn’t pulled the trigger yet. The Acer Predator Atlas 8 is an excellent device. I had heard for a long time that Windows based handheld PC’s can be cumbersome to interact with, and I feel that is no exception here, particularly since it launches in Xbox mode and has to exit that to the desktop to do anything else. Thankfully it does operate just like a typical Windows 11 PC for app installs such as Steam and other launchers, and experiences the same finicky controls that interacting with a touch screen laptop also introduces. Steam works well enough, but does sometimes struggle to with bouncing between the desktop view and the game when launching one. Going back to Xbox mode requires a restart to function properly which is definitely a complaint for me but might not apply to everyone. I do prefer just using this in Xbox mode as that is clearly how it is intended to be played. It also happens to be my own preferred app for PC gaming as I split the difference between that and console so I like to utilize Xbox play anywhere and Game Pass wherever I can. With that in mind, the Atlas 8 is fantastic. It works exactly as I hoped it would, syncing my progress automatically, and has a big, 1920x1200, 120hz refresh screen matched with incredible onboard speakers. Honestly the sound coming out of this device is astonishingly good. Most of the games I have played so far were either old enough that it was no issue to play them at higher settings or newer titles such as Gears of War E-Day did require a drop to lower settings to get good framerates. But even so, the game looked decent enough to be more than playable on the small screen on the go. Wifi 7 onboard works wonderfully on my network frequently getting 500-1000mbps download speeds for the games I installed, but I ran out of space on the paltry 512GB SSD after about 3 games. Installing a micro SD card mitigates that somewhat, but only works for certain launchers. Xbox seems to have no issue running and installing games to the SD card but steam will have no part of it. I definitely wish it had more storage. Games are just too large these days for 512GB to be anywhere close to enough. Battery life is good all things considered, it does not run too hot or loud while playing due to the excellent dual fan system, and manages to last 2-3 hours on a charge which is better than my Switch 2. It is also very comfortable to hold in spite of its size. It is very large and somewhat heavy but its ergonomics make up for a lot of that. I really appreciate that it includes a nice hard case and matte screen protector in the box which helps keep it protected and even more portable. Controls are high quality and feel great, with hall effect lockable triggers and TMR sticks with RGB halos around them. Shortcut buttons for jumping straight into customizable menus for graphics, battery, fan speed, RGB, and more. The only complaint is the mappable buttons on the rear are a little hard to reach and awkward to press. Overall I am very happy with the Atlas 8, it plays games well, uses Windows for the full PC experience, is snappy and runs cool, and includes everything you need to get playing right out of the box. I definitely recommend it to PC gamers who want to play on the go.

    Top tier handheld in 2026

When Acer announced the Predator Atlas 8 a few months ago, it seemed a little late to the party for handhelds in the US. Now that it’s here, its value and performance are easily top tier, which makes it a “must consider” for those looking for an efficient top performing gaming handheld! Absolute top tier performance. No matter what TDP you test at, the Arc G3 Extreme from Intel out performs all of the other options in the handheld space at pretty much 15-40w. If plugged in, you can run Forza Horizon 6 at 1200p high over 60fps with a bit of scaling. The LCD is very good, I really like the 8” 16:10 vs smaller others. 1920x1200 is a great resolution for this size, and the 120hz refresh rate is well suited to the max performance you’ll see from the B390 iGPU in the Acer G3 chip. The overall size is great and feels solid/hefty without feeling too heavy. The controls work extremely well for me and feel great, but I’m not exactly picky when it comes to controllers. The fans are very audible at top speed, but are surprisingly not annoying to me, quieter than other handhelds I’ve used, but not quiet. The battery life is stellar, it's listed at 80wh which is similar to other top tier mainstream handhelds. (there are a few boutique brands that make bigger, but are in a different value class or are much bigger) The biggest difference is the efficiency of the G3 Extreme, which will compete against similar handhelds at a lower TDP. I’m able to run FH6 at medium settings with XeSS performance scaling locked to 60fps and get between 2.5-3hrs of game time! Overall I think Acer makes the case for the best handheld overall in 2026, with this Atlas 8. Not only are they a top tier value in the handheld space currently, Acer also throws in a very nice case plus screen protector in the box with the Atlas!
