Scores Above It's Weight Class
Posted .Pros mentioned:Design, Display, PriceCons mentioned:Bulky, Heat, ModesIf you are looking for my Full Review of this product you can find it on YouTube here: (https://youtu.be/K5XBPOINlSw) BUILD QUALITY/AESTHETICS: The overall finish for this laptop is premium and it looks professional. The chassis is complete metal with an attractive dark color that they report is sandstorm. I’m a male which means I’m challenged color wise and can usually only stick to colors of the rainbow. So, reading the color sandstorm made me expect more of a tan color, but instead it comes across as more of a dark grey. It also has very attractive sharp edges that are rounded but still come across as sharp to the touch. Which makes it very manly for you manly men out there. Chest bump, bro fist, manly headbutt. No matter where I pick it up from it doesn’t flex unlike my biceps as with it being fully constructed out of metal it comes in at about 3.5 lbs. and for my Sponge Bob arms I almost buckle under it. There are little bits of rubber spread out across the edges of the device and on the hinge to help prevent metal on metal action. The build quality is excellent, to the point you could probably defend yourself by hitting your attacker in the head and then get back to watching Anime as if nothing happened. KEYBOARD: This keyboard feels excellent. There is a small amount of travel, with a crisp bump at the end, and what I would consider heavy actuation. As I am used to about 45 – 50 grams of actuation and this feel like 60. But that is purely guess work. I scored 113 WPM on a typing test which is average for me. Which means you can blaze on this guy. It has white backlighting which you can adjust to either be 100%, 50%, or 0%. It shows both primary and secondary characters and the light is equal throughout with attractive easy to read font. No complaints whatsoever here. TOUCHPAD: The touchpad overall is great. It comes in at about 4.5 inches in width and almost 3 inches in height so it’s quite large. Unlike my… pinky finger guys, come on. There is no button to disable it. It is quite easy to slide your finger across the pad and be highly accurate with it. Gestures and scrolling are responsive. However, my biggest complaint is that it does not have equal pressure throughout for the clicks. Starting with the bottom left and right it requires mild/moderate pressure with it being more on the moderate side. On the bottom middle it requires moderate pressure. On the middle, left and right, it requires moderate/severe pressure. The top middle, left and right are impossible to click. Which is what takes this touchpad going from excellent to just great. SCREEN: I find the screen on this guy to be a conundrum. It comes with a 1920x1080p screen. I had the zoom set to 125% as 150% (recommended) was too much and 100% made me lean in a bit too close with poor posture while using. It is a 6-bit panel. In comparison to 8-bit with/without dithering or even a 10-bit panel for 4k. Which means that you do not get the best contrast (I think it was about 600 in comparison to around 1000) and the sRGB coverage was 52%, Adobe RGB 44%, DCI-P3 41%, and BT.2100 30% with a max brightness of 250 lumens. Gamma was 1.4 instead of 2.2. Which honestly is terrible in comparison to today’s standards spec wise. However, that does not translate at all to what you are seeing. As it looks great. Blacks are black, greys are grey, and colors are accurate (despite lacking depth). To the point where most users will not even notice it is a low bit panel. Viewing angles were good and text was almost always crisp and clear. When I went through my usual testing for contrast, I was able to see all boxes for black easily (which rarely happens especially for laptop screens). For whites I was able to see everything except the last line (where I can usually see 2 out of 4 boxes). There was no banding and color grades were accurate (but once again lacked full color depth due to being 6-bit). Which means it performed excellently. As most laptops displays have poor viewing angles, terrible color accuracy, terrible contrast, and terrible banding. So, with it being a 6-bit panel I would give it a 10/10. When competing against other 8-bit panels I would give it an 8/10 with the only thing removing 2 points would be lacking contrast (would need to be closer to 1000) and color depth being poor (need sRGB to be 100%). This is a very long paragraph to just say the screen is excellent and a major player on why you aren’t paying >$1200 for this laptop. I wanted to spend a lot of time on this though because to me the screen is almost the most important part of a computer. Because if it sucks you won’t want to use it. Like my previous laptop that I owned for 8 years before getting this. BATTERY LIFE: This PC comes with 250 nits of maximum brightness, with a middle of the road processor (4700U), with INTEGRATED Rx Vega 7 Graphics, at 14 inches, at 1080p. Therefore, I was expecting to get fantastic battery life. From my testing I got seven and a half hours before I hit 6% battery life and it told me to plug in. This was with the screen set to 50%, the backlit keyboard set to 50%, and the processor set to 75 – 100%. For the first 4 – 5 hours I watched YouTube videos at 1080p with Bluetooth headphones connected. After that I worked on normal everyday tasks while listening to music. During this time, I had multiple tabs open, with Outlook going in the background, while I was typing a document. I was hoping to get closer to 10 hours. But for what I was doing I think getting seven and a half is still particularly good. With a few tweaks I believe I could have gotten 10 hours out of it. Which means that this will last you all day long. Especially, for a quick recharge during lunch. PROS: - Touchpad gets 90% of it right. Would prefer glass and have light actuation with equal pressure throughout. - Keyboard feels great to type on. - Screen is extremely nice for being a 6-bit IPS display. - Processor has plenty of power without destroying battery life. - Battery life is 7.5 hours with moderate use. Would prefer it to be closer to 10. Which I could get by being more conservative. - Build quality and aesthetics are premium. - Excellent price for what you get. - When you press the FN key and “esc” you can lock the FN and can adjust secondary characters with single press (such as volume up and down, or brightness). Which is a nice touch. - Cooling is good. It vents out the back. The device rarely got warm. When it did it was in the middle of the device on the top and bottom. The only time it got hot was when doing heavy workloads with settings turned up. -Fan is excellent. It is quiet most of the time. The loudest it got was when I was setting it up or when I had the screen and processor set to 100%. But even then, it wasn’t too distracting. - It has two 3.2 USB slots along with a single USB C. Along with full size HDMI and aux port. - Touch screen is very responsive. But still not quite as responsive as a tablet or cellphone device. - The screen requires a moderate amount of pressure to move and sticks to where you place it. Hinges appear sturdy to last the long haul. - The webcam has a built-in slider so you don’t get spied on. NICE! - Comes installed with top of the line wireless (Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)). My testing showed 280 down/30 up. With my speeds being rated at 300 down/30 up on the 5 GHz band. CONS: - Delete key is right next to the power button. Luckily, the power button requires a lot more force to actuate than the delete key which means I did not constantly put my computer to sleep. But could see this being a problem for others. - The page down and arrow keys are small along with the “\”. Which can bother some users. However, the main keys that most people use on a regular basis are full size which improves overall typing for most users. - Touchpad doesn’t have equal pressure throughout and requires a lot of force to click. Would prefer this to be light actuation and equal throughout. Otherwise it does a good job. - It has two down firing speakers located closest to your person which sound relatively good. But you’ll want to use headphones for the best quality. In which case it supports Bluetooth and has a 3.5mm aux out. - With it being 250 nit brightness, this laptop will struggle in extremely bright rooms and outdoor use. - The secondary keys only support play/pause not forward/backward. - Using it in tablet mode wasn’t the best experience as it is heavy as tablets go and I noticed a reduction in overall responsiveness. CONCLUSION: As I mentioned at the beginning of my review. A good laptop scores well in the following categories. 1. Screen quality, 2. Touchpad quality, 3. Keyboard Quality, 4. Battery life. And 5. Performance. If one of these is missing, it is a pass. I am happy to say this laptop does great in all 5 categories. You are getting top of the line specs (Ryzen 4700U, 512 GB M.2 SSD and 16 GB DDR4 3200 MHz RAM with full metal body). But by using budget parts, and therefore sacrificing just a little bit of performance, you are able to get an excellent laptop for less than $1000. The screen quality despite being a 6-bit IPS panel is fantastic. The touchpad is accurate and easy to use despite not having equal pressure throughout. The keyboard is a joy to use. The battery life with moderate use came in at 7.5 hours. And last it will be hard to find a better processor at this price. As this guy beats out the Intel 10750H which ships on almost all their “gaming laptops”. However, the integrated graphics does not perform well enough for gaming and the chassis is not equipped to cool for gaming. Which means do I recommend this product? The answer is YES. As long as you don’t plan to game or do serious video editing on it.

Sleek 2-in-1 laptop with great performance
Posted .Pros mentioned:Design, Display, PriceCons mentioned:BulkyVerdict: This laptop offers a lot of great features with matching performance. It’s a great option for traveling professionals. It also features a large vertical tablet or writing pad for those who prefer a tablet feel. First impressions. It is pretty slim overall, with the screen being very slim. I like that the side bezel is small, giving the impression of a larger screen. It is an ideal size to do work (nice size keyboard) and to enjoy for leisure. The ability to completely fold back the screen and use the computer as a large tablet or writing pad is awesome! Hardware. The keyboard feels nice and types well. The touchpad works great: it is easy to use, the buttons are responsive, and the multi-finger motions are cool (but take some getting use to). The screen looks great with bright and vibrant colors. The built-in webcam and mic work as expected. The built-in cover for the webcam is a wonderful addition. I normally have to put an ugly sticker on my webcam to ensure privacy. Windows 10. I went from Windows 7 to 10, so this was a significant but smooth transition. There is a lot to love about Windows 10 that I didn’t have with Windows 7. Computer performance. The AMD Rizen 7 processor, SSD, and 16GB of RAM provide a great user experience. I can run several MS Office apps and many web-browser tabs with no issues. It will easily fulfill all requirements for business trips. It also handles streaming and video watching well. I no longer hesitate to close the lid and let the computer hibernate because it is so quick to start back up. Touchscreen. I love that I can flip the screen around to use it as a large tablet and writing pad. I had a cheap digital pen at home to try on the screen; it worked reasonably well, but not as well as another manufacturer’s digital pencil. I plan to buy an active pen since I really like to take notes on tablets. I hope it will work well, but I can’t be sure yet. Things I love. - Premium quality field - Lighted keys are very nice - The webcam has a built-in cover for ensured privacy - The keyboard feels nice and types well - Large tablet that lays flat - It was a good idea to build the fingerprint reader into the power button - Beautiful HD screen with vibrant colors - The solid-state drive allows for fast startup - 16 GB of RAM runs a boat load of programs with ease - Built-in alexa is a nice touch, you can now have echo functionality on the road! It actually works well and I think I will use it all the time on the laptop. If I am already working on my laptop, I can ask alexa to drop-in on different echo devices at home and talk to the family. I love it! - Active pen compatibility - Quiet fan! Huge improvement from my previous laptop - It is my first wifi 6 device that can take full advantage of my wifi 6 router! Things I don’t love. - As much as I want to love the fingerprint reader, it doesn’t work well for me. I am able to log on by fingerprint only once in six or seven tries. I have re-registered the fingerprint a few times to see if it would make it better, but no change. - One more USB-C port would have been ideal - Including an Active pen would have been nice Overall, this is a very nice laptop and a fantastic tablet that fulfills all my requirements for business and personal use. It is not cheap, but the great specs and overall quality justify the price. I highly recommend it.

Sleek and Slim In Design
Posted .Pros mentioned:Design, Display, ProcessorCons mentioned:HeatWhen first opening the packaging of the laptop, the first thing I noticed immediately was the sleek and slim design. The compact size allows for being able to put in your purse, briefcase, backpack, and or tote bag. This design allows for easy travel. Compared to other laptops I have owned, it is also lightweight. That is a plus for me, as I try to limit the number of heavy objects I lift. When setting up the laptop loved the interactive feature of being able to use voice commands to help in setting up the device. This laptop uses Windows 10, the other laptop I own uses Windows 7. The laptop also comes with fingerprint authentication. The laptop has a touchscreen and found it fairly easy to use. I also host a lot of virtual meetings. As a business professional, I host virtual meetings. Recently, used the laptop while hosting a virtual meeting, the sound and video quality were excellent. The display gave the appearance for me as though I was right there in the room with the team I was interacting with. That was the first thing my family noticed while they saw me in the virtual meeting. When downloading software and other programs to the laptop the download speeds were fast. Was highly impressed with this, as sometimes some laptops can have a lag in time when downloading. Watched videos on social media platforms as well, with no issues. For those of you that have never owned a Dell product, please be sure to notice the small little slider at the top of the laptop screen to unhide the camera. PROS: Can be used as a tablet Built-in Alexa/Voice Recognition (Loved that feature) Slim Design Fast processing speed Keyboard lights up Long Battery Life Audio and Visual Display Great Ability to Sync your phone HD Webcam Usually, I do not care for touchpads. This one was easy to use. Thank you for the ease of use on this Dell. CONS: Can get hot fast if downloading too many items Number KeyPad would have liked to see No CD slot (but know a lot of newer versions of laptops, don't offer this feature because of many using apps to listen to music.), I'm old school would like to have seen this feature, but it's not a deal-breaker. Slightly concerned about the hinges of the laptop, wondering how they will hold up. But they appear to be pretty sturdy. Other than that, I actually like it and have been getting compliments with the team I work with.

Outstanding AMD Ryzen Laptop
Posted .Pros mentioned:Design, Display, PriceCons mentioned:BulkyThe Dell Inspiron 14 7000 2-in-1-14 inch AMD Ryzen 7 Laptop is truly outstanding and checks practically every box from design to performance. I have used Dell Laptops for many years and when I saw the most recent lineup included the Ryzen 7 CPU I was ecstatic. The setup was fast and straightforward. Dell even included a pop up warranty registration form you can fill out and submit. It creates an account and registers the computer. Should you ever need warranty support/service within the provided period you are set. Pros: * Design - Simply put, the Sandstorm color looks high class. It includes a backlit keyboard. The laptop chassis feels well built and is lightweight only weighing slightly over 5 lbs. It does not have a CD/DVD drive which I prefer because it decreases the bulkiness of the laptop as well as reduces the weight. Practically every software program is available digitally and if for some reason it is not you can easily attach an external CD/DVD drive. Lastly, I find the 14 inch screen size is ideal for everyday tasks. Laptops with screens larger than 14 inches feel bulky/oversized and screens smaller than 14 inches can be difficult to read text on. * Tablet mode - This adds great functionality to the laptop making the screen touch friendly. It is an ideal feature for those who want the ability to take handwritten notes with an Active Pen you can buy separately. I have no doubt it will be able to withstand repeated 360 degree flips into tablet mode given its well made chassis. * Hardware - The Ryzen 7 processor included in this laptop makes it one of the best in its class. It sports an 8 core 16 thread processor which is an absolute beast. If you try to find an Intel based system with a similar processor expect to spend significantly more to achieve the same or less performance. It includes a 512 GB SSD which is great considering most laptops in this price range come with a 256 GB. It includes 16 GB of DDR4 RAM which is really the sweet spot for the large majority of users. I had no trouble multitasking between multiple browser tabs, Netflix, and Microsoft office. The integrated AMD Radeon Graphics also supported light gaming (Minecraft) without any issues; however, remember this is not designed to be a gaming laptop so take that into consideration when purchasing. * WIFI 6 Connectivity - Dell included the necessary hardware to support the newest WIFI technology, WIFI 6. If you have a compatible WIFI 6 router, you will be able to take advantage of even faster, more stable speeds. I have the Linksys Max Stream AX6000 WIFI 6 router and this laptop is able to take advantage of the new 802.11 ax standard. * HD webcam with cover - The included built in sliding cover was a great addition. I hated having to put a piece of tape over the camera or add an external webcam cover. * Fingerprint reader - I have always liked having the ability to sync my fingerprint for quick access. * Touchpad - It is very responsive and accurate. I had no issues with it not registering clicks. * Nice assortment of ports - It includes a HDMI, two 3.2 Gen 1 USB, headphone/microphone jack, built-in media reader, and Thunderbolt 3 type-C. Overall, I really like this laptop. Dell did a great job with the design and included hardware. It offers great aesthetics and performance for the price. I highly recommend it.

Noteworthy Performer
Posted .Pros mentioned:Display, Price, ProcessorCons mentioned:HeatThe 2020 Dell Inspiron 7000 2in1 with the 8 core AMD Ryzen 7 4700U is startling powerful. I don’t know that you’ll find more CPU power for the price. The build is approaching premium, the port selection is acceptable for the size, the screen is bright enough and has a quality you can appreciate. The average consumer may still be under the impression that Intel is king. Don't believe purely in marketing power. The 3rd gen Ryzen platform spanks the competition in bang for the buck. Let’s talk about what this unit does have – cutting edge WIFI 6, a USB Type-c port (supports PD), 0% - 80% charge in 1 hour, a lightning fast finger print scanner for Windows Hello, 2 USB A GEN 3.2 ports, a full sized HDMI out, SD Card reader, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVME SSD, FHD touch screen and 8 cores of AMD CPU magic. All of this at only about 3.39Lbs. This really is top of the line for your average user. The keyboard is nice to type on with decent travel. The keyboard layout is fine considering the 14” form factor. However, the page up/page down placement is a little strange. Coming from 13” laptops, I guess it’s nice that those buttons are even included. I’ve become accustomed to just using FN+up/down but you may not find yourself in the same boat. Note that the Best Buy description states “RGB backlit keyboard” – this is not accurate. It's an LED backlit keyboard. No fancy backlights here. I have one complaint and I don’t know that it’s too big a deal for your average user. It should be noted that the keyboard and underside can become very hot. Like, absurdly hot. I don’t think this is outside the scope of expected operating parameters, but I did find it unpleasant on the rare occasion. I noticed it after the initially after setting the notebook up for the first time and running Windows/driver updates. Through the course of regular use, I never really noticed it. Even when using it to edit/export RAW images from a DSLR, it never really got that hot again. As a suggestion, and it’s normal to see in your run of the mill OEM consumer notebooks, but the AMD platform really would benefit from having 2 sticks of RAM in order to leverage dual channel memory. With a single 16GB stick already installed, most won’t feel the need for more. However, if you do find the need to add another 16GB stick, you’ll also get the added benefit of going from single channel to dual channel memory.

A perfectly adequate product
Posted .Pros mentioned:Display, Price, ProcessorSo... this is a perfectly adequate product for its purpose - a daily driver. But it doesn't really excel at anything To start with, it has a great metallic build quality, and everything feels premium to the touch. However, I would have preferred much thinner bezels on the 14" screen. A lot of other companies are providing that in this form factor, and Dell should have as well. Most glaring is the absence of Windows Face Hello IR sensors, given the big bezel at the top. There are no complaints on the IO side, since it has all the ports you would need - headset jack, 2 USB A, full SD card slot, USB C (can also be used for power delivery), full HDMI. Power through USB C, is an added benefit, given that this also has a normal power port. Wish they could have squeezed in an ethernet port, but I think I am asking for too much there. The AMD chip in the laptop is its shining star - it is fast and snappy and handles pretty much anything you throw at it. However, when I got the laptop it was absolutely horrendous - it needed a BIOS update to perform to its optimal level. What's more frustrating was that Dell has multiple applications that act as driver update delivery managers, and myDell showed this update, while Dell Drivers and Update did not. So, please go in and update the BIOS as the first thing you do when you get the machine. Coming back to the things Dell could have done better - the keyboard layout. The fact that the home and end keys are shared with F11 and F12 is inexcusable. I can't explain how many times I have tried to press Home and ended up with my browser in full screen mode. There has to be a better way. Also, for me the keys are a bit too far apart, and as I write this review I can feel my hands are having to be very conscious about hitting the keys. The fingerprint sensor on the power button is also a bit of a hit and miss in my experience at least. Not taking too many points away from this, since anyways I would have preferred the Windows Face Hello login. The touch sensitive screen is an added bonus, and the screen overall has great viewing angles and color accuracy. I have not used the tablet fold mode too often. At this size its not that useful, but it is helpful to use in folded mode for better video viewing experience. I have beaten up on the laptop enough in my review till now, but I am using it as my daily driver now, since my previous 15.6" Dell laptop was a bit too heavy to be used while moving around. And the fact is for daily work and daily browsing the performance is amazing. At one point you just stop thinking about it - and that's the best compliment for any machine.

Despite cons, its sleek, sharp, and dependable
Posted .Pros mentioned:Design, Display, PriceAt first glance — this is an incredibly speedy, sleek, and lightweight device and I personally love the feel of it. The build quality is sturdy, solid, and simply has a high quality feel. The 2-in-1 design allows for me to use it as both a tablet and laptop according to my needs, and for anyone unfamiliar with this setup, the device does ask you if you want to switch to each interface and it adapts accordingly. As always here are my pros and cons: PROS Sleek, lightweight design Crisp screen resolution and display Spot for a 2.5” SATA drive Decent battery life (I played a very “busy” game, watched several YouTube videos, and a full movie and got about 7 hours of use with no charger attached) 6 bit IPS display is REALLY NICE! Webcam has built-in slider to eliminate unwanted spying (looove this!) Finally a quiet cooling fan Sound and visual display are excellent for watching YouTube or movies on Netflix (feels like a little TV) CONS: Sharp chassis edges Had to restart twice due to black screen coming out of sleep mode Had to close and reopen a few times as the keyboard wasn’t recognizing for some reason Touchpad is a bit uneven in the pressure needed in certain areas It is a “heavy” tablet in tablet mode, but is fine once you get used to this Unfortunately, the main thing I wanted this device for was for video editing and I am unsure if the integrated graphics will be friendly to this, but overall, would I recommend this laptop? Absolutely! Great idea for the price.

An Incredible Laptop
Posted .Pros mentioned:Design, DisplayCons mentioned:Bulky, TouchpadThis Dell Inspiron looks like it took some of its design details from the Macbook Pro - but the exterior is a little more angular and the Sandstorm color/finish is far more attractive (though more susceptible to smudges and fingerprints). It's a bit heavier but it feels incredibly solid and well-constructed. The 512GB SSD gives me a full boot into Windows from off in 13 seconds - full installation leaves over 400GB free. The keyboard is responsive and comfortable and the touchpad is surprisingly large and useful for such a small laptop. The screen is bright and clear and beautiful. If this were just a basic laptop, I think it would be an excellent deal at this price. But this Inspiron also sports a touch-screen display that swivels back 180° to allow it to be used as a tablet. And the transition and touch features work flawlessly. I have only three caveats: (1) this is the first laptop I have used in a while that actually gets kinda hot - I found that it could get uncomfortably hot when it was sitting on my lap, (2) because of the heat, I guess it needs a somewhat aggressive fan and I found the frequently cycling fan to be a little bit of an annoyance, & (3) the audio sounds very clear but at full volume the sound is not very loud and I found it to be unsatisfying. The positives here overwhelm the negatives, though. Dell is throwing down the gauntlet with this laptop. The size might make it undesirable to gaming users but I can't imagine who else might be unimpressed by this release!

Q: QuestionIs this laptop made of aluminum?
Asked by David.
- A:Answer From Dell's Website for this model: "Final touches: We elevated our design with an aluminum top cover and palm rest that features diamond-cut edges around the track pad." So, some aluminum and the rest plastic. Bottom cover is often plastic because it can be removed more easily for upgrades.
