This is a lost episode of the 2nd Doctor. The original video footage was lost but the audio remained. The entire episode has been animated and joined with the original audio soundtrack to give us back this adventure that's been lost for almost 50 years.

The Second Doctor's debut episode was pretty darn good. However, this animated recreation is missing some of the stage direction. For example there's a spot where Ben wonders how the Doctor got his recorder back, where as it was actually shown in the film version where the Doctor swiped it back from Ben after he took it away. (It doesn't quite make sense in the animation because you don't know why Ben says that.)

If not for Patrick Troughton, there's a fair chance Doctor Who would have died off in 1966. The original actor, William Hartnell, had become ill and someone was needed to replace him, the original Doctor. After a brief search, Troughton was tapped and became the character's first regeneration -- a literal morph into a new person and what an eccentric character he turned out to be! Troughton became the new standard and at least two of the actors to take on the role of the Doctor since the 2005 series' revival have used Troughton as a reference in how to portray the character. Unfortunately, very few of the serials that make up Troughton's run as the Second Doctor still exist intact. Whole serials are missing as a result of tape-wiping by the BBC in the mid-1970s. Only a small portion of these missing episodes have been located since and even then whole serials are gone and exist only as stills and audio captured at the time these episodes were broadcast -- usually only ONCE -- in Great Britain. The BBC, as a result of Doctor Who's revival and greater popularity worldwide, has undertaken the task of recreating the missing episodes from the archival audio, stills, and computer animation. This DVD release is perhaps the third or fourth time episodes have been recreated with CG and is the first serial ENTIRELY recreated in CG. This DVD release is a landmark because it recreates Patrick Troughton's first regular serial appearance as the Second Doctor. Yes, it's NOT a Pixar movie or photo-realitistic BUT it is likely the only way we'll say this serial as close as to the original way as possible short of restaging the episodes with recast parts. It's still much better than those motion comics Marvel has done over the years and it's Doctor Who with arguably the most important Who lead after the original lead actor! If you don't come out appreciating Patrick Troughton after this, I don't know what will get you to like him! There are other great serials with the Second Doctor available in their entirety (the classic "Enemy of the World") but this is the first, the original that helped re-establish Doctor Who and enabled the program to survive past William Hartnell's tenure...
