If not for Patrick Troughton, there's a fair chance Doctor Who would have died off in 1966. The original actor, William Hartnell, had become ill and someone was needed to replace him, the original Doctor. After a brief search, Troughton was tapped and became the character's first regeneration -- a literal morph into a new person and what an eccentric character he turned out to be! Troughton became the new standard and at least two of the actors to take on the role of the Doctor since the 2005 series' revival have used Troughton as a reference in how to portray the character. Unfortunately, very few of the serials that make up Troughton's run as the Second Doctor still exist intact. Whole serials are missing as a result of tape-wiping by the BBC in the mid-1970s. Only a small portion of these missing episodes have been located since and even then whole serials are gone and exist only as stills and audio captured at the time these episodes were broadcast -- usually only ONCE -- in Great Britain. The BBC, as a result of Doctor Who's revival and greater popularity worldwide, has undertaken the task of recreating the missing episodes from the archival audio, stills, and computer animation. This DVD release is perhaps the third or fourth time episodes have been recreated with CG and is the first serial ENTIRELY recreated in CG. This DVD release is a landmark because it recreates Patrick Troughton's first regular serial appearance as the Second Doctor. Yes, it's NOT a Pixar movie or photo-realitistic BUT it is likely the only way we'll say this serial as close as to the original way as possible short of restaging the episodes with recast parts. It's still much better than those motion comics Marvel has done over the years and it's Doctor Who with arguably the most important Who lead after the original lead actor! If you don't come out appreciating Patrick Troughton after this, I don't know what will get you to like him! There are other great serials with the Second Doctor available in their entirety (the classic "Enemy of the World") but this is the first, the original that helped re-establish Doctor Who and enabled the program to survive past William Hartnell's tenure...

Considered one of the great lost Doctor Who stories, this 6-part adventure hasn't been seen in over forty years, as the original BBC transmission tapes were destroyed to make room for newer recordings in the archives. This story is so highly regarded that the BBC commissioned a restoration of sorts. Using surviving film clips, fragment and photographs of the actual production, combined with the original audio soundtrack, this story can now be enjoyed again in animated form. The flash animation is somewhat limited, but it works just fine. The story is presented in black and white as was the original, but a second disc has the episodes presented in color. There are loads of extras included, so this Doctor Who release is definitely worth getting.

The best thing about this DVD is finally being able to see the first Patrick Traughton of Doctor who, even if via animation. Sure, it would be better to have the complete original video to go with the original soundtrack, but unless that film is uncovered somewhere one of these days, that is not an option. The animation is also very true to how the original was filmed. The mere fact that this is a Dalek story also makes this worth watching, since the Daleks are such a favorite Doctor Who enemy.

All 6 episodes of this story were wiped from the BBC archives decades ago, save the audio soundtrack. Through brief surviving clips and stills the story has been painstakingly reconstructed by fans - but these reconstructions are not always easy to follow. This animated approach faithfully reconstructs the story through all available stills and sources to an approximation of its original splendor! BRAVO BBC!!!

Many of the early Doctor Who episodes were erased in the 60s-70s and though some have been recovered, this one was not. This is a recreation of the missing episodes to the soundtrack that was recorded of the aired program. While by no means perfect it is a great way to see the otherwise missing show. The disc also includes the few photos/clips that still exist.

The Power of the Daleks is a lost Doctor Who story that has been brilliantly brought back through animation. The discs include both the black and whit and colored version of this story. A great into to the 2nd Doctor if you are not familiar with him. Hopefully this will encourage the BBC to animate the other lost episodes.

This is a lost episode of the 2nd Doctor. The original video footage was lost but the audio remained. The entire episode has been animated and joined with the original audio soundtrack to give us back this adventure that's been lost for almost 50 years.

Although visually impressive, the comic strip style animation is stilted and lacking in "animation" to the extent that it sometimes detracts from the story. A sock puppet version could convey more expression and fluidity, but the low price, obvious historic significance, and sheer quantity of material serve to temper potential disappointment.
