Chances are, if you have an Xbox, you've either played Gears of War or have seen it played. This remaster of the original Gears of War is a solid attempt. In an age where remasters are releasing very often, this game delivers more than most. It's more than a simple remaster. It's been put on Unreal Engine 4, the graphics have been boosted and the cinematics have been redone to look a TON better.
I'll start with the negative: The campaign is locked to 30fps. The xbox one should be capable of running this game at 60fps, without any problems whatsoever. It has good graphics, but not great and it's a very linear shooter. There's no excuse for 30fps. Another negative is that the only way they got multiplayer to run at 60fps is by stripping the graphics down, by a lot. Multiplayer is definitely not easy on the eyes. Some maps look decent, but others, like Mansion, look rather bad. It's another testament to the lack of power behind the xbox one, which continues to be a big issue.
Now the positive: The Unreal Engine 4 overhaul makes the campaign look great and the cinematics even better. The gameplay is smooth as ever and has been refined to match Gear of War 3, rather than the original Gears of War. The multiplayer is really polished, there is the leveling system from Gears 3 and there are unlockable characters and skins, adding a bit to the depth of multiplayer, compared to the original Gears, which was simple, with no unlocks or customization or leveling. The aiming has been altered as well, not in a negative way, but simply a side-step. Takes a little getting used to, which is fine.
It's a solid game, and if you liked the previous games, you'll like the remaster, and it will hold you over until Gears of War 4.
