Gymkata [DVD] [1985]

Warner offers up a decent no-frills disc for B-movie fans with this DVD of Gymkata. The video transfer is the best part, offering a crisp anamorphic, widescreen image with strong colors and solid detail. It shows its age in a few spots but is of good quality overall. The dialogue seems a little low in spots in the disc's mono soundtrack mix, but this seems like a peculiarity of the mix as the music and oft-cartoonish sound effects come through just fine. The only extras included are a trailer for Gymkata and a bonus trailer for The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning. An interview or a commentary track would have been nice, especially given the film's cult following. However, the fans can console themselves with the fact that the trailer for Gymkata is the kind of old-fashioned "hard sell" that one doesn't see anymore. All in all, this is a decent, if rather bare-bones disc that allows fans to reconnect with this B-movie favorite.

In a standard no-plotter, this is a martial arts showcase for gymnast Kurt Thomas as Jonathan Cabot, the front line man sent out to secure a military foothold in an unfriendly, unnamed country in Eastern Europe near the Caspian sea. Jonathan has to use his lethal weapons (hands and feet) and his ingenuity to chop down legions of adversaries, especially in a one-against-all scene in a rustic village. With scenic Yugoslav landscapes and the attractive Miss Philippines (Tetchie Agbayani) as Princess Rubali, the film offers some visual appeal as well as whirling martial arts choreography. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
