I bought in store and would have thought my kids would like it so much, plus the game gives you new building instruction as you progress in the game so I can help my kids out when they need help. Also my kids don't just sit and play theyour have to get up and move pieces around and figure things out. ITS PRETTY COOL☆☆☆☆☆

I had been wanting to play this game for a while and when the price dropped, I went ahead and purchased it. I really love it and have had hours of fun gaming playing it and adding new characters and kits.

If not maybe skip this one.
Let's get this out of the way. Unless you are a collector of vintage Video Game cabinets, this is the most expensive video game you will ever buy.
This base set will allow you to play all of the story levels, and give you access to three of the sandbox worlds (DC Comics, Middle Earth, and the Lego Movie), but you will be constantly encountering puzzles and areas you can't access unless you buy more figures/sets/levels. And even if you do decide to pony up the cash and buy more, as of this writing you can't even 100% the base game until the fifth wave of figures comes out and you buy the Midway Level Pack ($29.99).
There is a lot of game to play, but no more than say Fallout, or the Witcher 3, heck for the same money as the base set you could buy 2 or three of the older non-playset video games from Lego and get the same play value.
So why the heck am I giving it 4 stars? Cause I do love Lego. This is a cash sink, if the thought of spending hundreds of dollars on one game seems insane to you, you're right stay away! But I was lost the second they said I could own my own Portal Legos, and Doctor Who, and the Ghostbusters, and... You get the idea.
So think long and hard before jumping into this game, unless you suffer the same love as I, in which case pull up a chair and open your wallet, I'll be here with you for the ride. :-)

What a great game! I've been a fan of all the LEGO videogames, from Star Wars in 2006 to Jurassic World in 2015...I own them all. I thought this would be more of the same, but it's not...it's even better! LEGO really hit the mark with this one.
I never quite understood the popularity of Skylanders...and while INFINITY figures looked great, the gameplay did not grab my attention. What got me interested in Dimensions is that they have actual voiceovers of the real actors playing some of these characters. The LEGO movie, Back To The Future and Ghostbusters sets are what sold me.
Dimensions is sort of like the previous LEGO games, and I'm not quite sure how to explain it, but it's different in a way that they've put a lot more time, thought and money into this than the others it seems. I didn't even really think I'd start collecting these guys, but here I am with almost every character now. It's a lot of fun building your LEGO guy outside of the game and then placing them on the included platform to see your creation come to life in the game.
While it can be a bit pricey when you start collecting all these characters, there's so many constant sales going on by every single retailer, that the prices are actually quite reasonable afterwards.
P.S. I really think the writing is great! Had me laughing out loud! Very happy with my purchase. Can't wait for the Ghostbusters sets to be released :)

Still worth buying in 2018

I bought this in 2018, almost a year after LEGO Dimensions was discontinued, and right now is probably the best time to buy it. The Starter Pack is now a fantastic value by itself, many Fun Packs and even Level Packs can be found for reasonable prices, and the main game has plenty of content to keep you entertained for many hours. I'd recommend picking up at least a few additional Fun Packs for the best experience (some powers/abilities can only be used by certain characters, so if you want to 100% the game you'll need to buy a few more characters and accessories), but it is still possible to play and complete the story mode using just what comes in the Starter Pack, so if you don't care about finding all the in-game collectibles don't let the toys-to-life aspect scare you away.
If you haven't played a LEGO game before it's basically an action/adventure platformer that takes place in the LEGO world, so in addition to the usual exploration, fighting, and puzzles you find in most games there's also a lot of smashing LEGO objects and using the pieces to build new objects to reach your goals. The game itself doesn't really rely on the physical toys at all apart from some mini-puzzles, they're mainly used as an excuse to sell additional sets and to include other franchises like The Simpsons, Back to the Future, and Doctor Who, as well as give collectors something to play with or display when they're not playing the game. So just to reiterate, this is a full-length game that can be played without buying anything extra. It's not just for kids either, it's entertaining and challenging enough for adults to enjoy too. Definitely worth the price that it's selling for right now.
Also make sure to update the game before starting, as the original release has a bug that will cause the tutorial to stop responding after you first build the Batmobile. The very long opening cutscenes aren't skippable and the first save point isn't until after this section, so you could end up wasting a lot of time and have to restart the game from the beginning if you encounter that bug.

I have a six and twelve year old, and we all have so much fun with this game. Building the characters and then playing in the different worlds. We already love all of the Lego video games and Lego stepped it up with this game. Warning: This will get pricey because you want tot collect all of the sets to be able to access all of the in game fun.

LEGO Dimensions starter set is fun, I purchased it for PS4.
It's the most expensive video game I ever purchased, was it worth the money? Yes and no.
Yes because its good LEGO video game fun and it's cool to interact with all the different themes.
No because playing it feels like other LEGO video games for the most part. The main difference is the pad with the character and vehicle discs. First few times moving characters was fun but it did get tedious after a while. Plus have to make sure the pad is nearby or you will have to get up at the worst time to move a character.
Overall, it is a fun game.
