Limited red and white swirl colored vinyl LP pressing. Bartees Strange has been one of the most significant indie artists to break out in the post-pandemic era. He debuted with Say Goodbye to Pretty Boy, an album length collection of The National songs released in March 2020, on the cusp of the pandemic. Later that year came his first LP Mustang which was named to endless year end best lists including those from Pitchfork, Stereogum, Rolling Stone, and NPR Music. He quickly signed to 4AD and his debut for the tag Farm To Table turned him into a club headliner and an arena-sized opening act with genre-defining artists such as The National, boygenius, Phoebe Bridgers and Courtney Barnett. The vinyl-exclusive Magic Boy represents the Bartees story before this story began -33 1/2 minutes of recordings created before he entered the public eye, with 8 out of 10 never previously released. It finds his ever malleable sound touching on genres like coffee house folk (InchIDKInch - InchBest Of YouInch - InchYou're HereInch), emo troubadour (InchCount It BackInch - InchLittle BrotherInch), and wigged-out experimentation (InchEat Your Heart OutInch). Appended with two tracks previously available only as digital b-sides from Say Goodbye (InchHAGSInch - InchGoing GoingInch) it reads as a kind of InchlostInch album for someone shaping up to be a major voice in indie music. Bartees' story is a fairy tale of independent community and a triumph of efforts to diversify what the word Inchindie rockInch even means, reclaiming it for Black artists. The Magic Boy LP is a fine way to celebrate Bartees Strange's explosive trajectory and his run of dates opening for The National at arenas across Europe in autumn 2023. Around the Fur the follow-up to Deftones' passionate, aggressive Adrenaline, sees the California quartet expanding on the sheer rage of their earlier work, adding new, more sinister shades to their already extreme sound. The opening InchMy Own Summer (Shove It),Inch serves as an introduction to the album's sonic theme sinewy guitars and eerie whispers alternate with fast, violent crunch. Sepultura's Max Cavallero contributes guitar and vocals to InchHeadup,Inch while InchMXInch finds singer Chino trading off vocal lines with Annalynn Cunningham, (wife of Deftones' drummer Abe) in an acerbic take on the rock star mentality. Vocal acrobat Moreno attacks a variety of styles his breathy, psychotic recitations sound downright industrial, while the album's calmer, more brooding moments show his gift for haunting melody. Behind him, guitarist Stephen Carpenter's heavy wall of sound is astoundingly muscular, yet inspiringly agile. When Deftones' hellish fury hits full tilt, as it always does on this album, Moreno's voice erupts into screams which are best described as otherworldly, transforming this intense musical firestorm into a hurtling juggernaut of aggression. This LP version comes pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Album Tracks 1. My Own Summer (Shove It) 2. Lhabia 3. Mascara 4. Around the Fur 5. Rickets 6. Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) 7. Lotion 8.
