Every year we buy my son an Xbox gift card for his birthday. This was the first time, after he received it and was excited to use it, it would not work.
When he/ we tried to activate the card through his Xbox console, a message popped up stating that the card was not activated. I wasted a few hours traveling back to Best Buy to get the card "activated", only told told by the representative and finally by the manager that it is showing that they can't activate it because, guess what, it was already activated, according to their "system".
They then pass the problem on to Xbox, saying there is NOTHING they could do.
After online chat with Xbox representatives and a few emails back and forth of copied of receipts and gift card, we got it fixed, but it took a long time and was very inconvenient.
WORD OF ADVICE, MAKE SURE CASHIER IN FACT ACTIVATES THE CARD, ASK TO SEE PROOF, YOU ARE THE CONSUMER.
