    Night at the Museum
The new night watchman at New York's Museum of Natural History finds that the job comes with more responsibility than he ever dreamed in this wild fantasy comedy directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Mickey Rooney, and Dick Van Dyke. Larry Daley (Stiller) is a kind-hearted dreamer who always knew that he was destined for greatness, he just never quite knew how. None of his ideas or inventions has panned out, so with a heavy heart, he takes a regular job as a lowly graveyard-shift security guard at the Museum of Natural History in order to provide a more stable life for himself and his ten-year-old son. His first night on the job, however, he finds that guardianship of the museum is far from stable -- at nightfall, an Egyptian spell brings the artifacts and wax figures to life! With Attila the Hun charging to war through the hallways, the diorama miniatures embroiled in a deadly feud, and a two-ton Tyrannosaurus Rex nagging to play fetch, Larry has half a mind to turn tail and run. On top of cleaning up after two million years of historical chaos every night, he also has to make sure that not a single museum piece leaves the building -- from the bratty Capuchin monkey in the African exhibit, to the life-sized Neanderthal in the prehistoric display -- because if morning light falls on an escaped artifact, it will turn to dust. Larry turns to a wax replica of President Roosevelt (Williams) for a little advice on keeping things in tact, but Teddy seems to think that a man of Larry's greatness needs little help. Larry isn't sure if the former commander in chief is right; this is hardly what he signed up for, but he can't pass up the chance to care for a museum where history really does come to life. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

      A fun film

      • Top 50 ContributorTop 50 Contributor

I enjoy this film. Glad to have it widescreen. Stiller doing the SAME ROLE UNDER A DIFFERENT NAME like in Mary & both the Meet The Films. Put upon, getting even his way role. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT STILLER!! BORING!! I did NOT like the film for him. Robin was very good in his role as teddy Roosevelt. Needed MUCH MORE OF HIM. Glad to see Dick Van Dick & Mickey Rooney. I HATED Ricky Gervais CHARACTER. And, this is the only thing I have ever seen him in. Now, I expected MUCH MORE from this special edition package. No real Making of special. Stiller & Dick were spoken to in 1 piece. WHERE THE HECK WAS ROBIN OR MICKEY ROONEY? Good but should have been great package. If you are a stiller fan you will like it. A fan of Robin’s like myself you will be disappointed in the extras. Good job, do better next time film makers with the DVD package.

      very fun family movie

This is a movie that anyone would enjoy. It has a decent plotline and has enough laughs and surprises to keep the whole family entertained. We have both this movie and the second one (Battle of the Smithsonian) and all of us - 2 adults, a 5 year old, and a 9 year old - agree that we prefer this one, although both are very fun. I do not know about the bonus features or if there are any as we have not looked at them if there are any. Do keep in mind that there are a few spots that may scare younger or more sensitive kids, so you may want to watch it yourself first so you can warn the kids when the scary parts are coming. Overall an excellent family movie.

A must have for your collection

This was a great movie, one that my wife and I got to see in the theater, before our son was born. After we watched it, we knew we had to get it when it came out. Originally we bought it on DVD, however our now 2 year old son got ahold of it and destroyed it. So we bought it again this time on BD. WHAT A DIFFERENCE that BD makes. The characters both real and CG really come to life. REXY really makes the show, our son loves it. We broke down and bought our son a cheap BD player for his room, this way we could watch other shows. He wants to watch it over and over again. BUT NOW with the coming out of part 2, we will definately have to have both.

      Fun filled movie

Night at the Museum is a wonderful movie. It is fun to watch, parts make you bust out laughing and it's got an intriguing idea. Ben Stiller plays someone out of work waiting for the next big chance. He then gets a job as a night guard at the museum which turns out to be an adventure in itself because everything in the museum comes to life at night. There is a little bit of a twist were some people who didn't need to be bad turn out to be and they kind of don't explain this story arch to its much needed conclusion. All in all I would recommend this title to anyone who enjoys comedy, history, or Ben Stiller.

Great start to an awesome 'trilogy'

Night At The Museum, a fun action-adventure family film starring Ben Stiller, kicks off a great 'trilogy' of films featuring a museum that comes to life every night (thanks to a magic Egyptian artifact). I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but this movie is escapist fun at its purest. Stiller is excellent (as usual) as the hapless protagonist. The special effects are a little dated (by today's standards), but still hold up reasonably well.

      Not his best

I have been a Ben Stiller fan since Mystery Men. But I found this one to be lacking a little. It had its funny moments, but I found myself laughing extra hard because I thought the moment would be funnier but it wasn't. My anticipation is what led me to finish the movie. I own it and I haven't watched it a second time. Had I seen it at the movies first, which I wanted to but had a newborn at home, I wouldn't have bought the DVD. Good but not great.

A make you smile, feel good movie

Ben Stiller really needs to thank his agent for this one. This is a great movie, fun, exciting, some suspense, drama, comedy. Reminds me of no movie in particular but it does remind me of the feel good movies of the 80's like Back to the Future, Short Circuit, and Batteries Not Included to name a few. This is one for the kids and for the adults. I'm almost 30 and can't wait to see the 2nd installment! Absolutely worth watching!

      Old Fashioned Family Fun

My family loves this movie and it is one of a very few that can safely been shown to younger children and not fill their minds with harmful images or language. The story is crazy but fun and the special effects and computerization made it all very believable and entertaining. For those looking for a movie you can sit down and enjoy with the kids (while enjoying it yourself), this is one you will love.
